Depends what rules the game would be played with, IMO. 2004 would win if it was their rules with tighter checking, no two line pass, etc., 2017 would win with present rules because they're a lot more faster and skilled I think.

This. Tons of slow players on that team. I'm not sure Corey Sarich in his prime would be an NHL regular which is nuts. Our smaller players would get destroyed with the smaller ice and tighter checking of 2004 though.

Is Stamkos (and Callahan, etc.) healthy in this matchup?

Let's face the facts if they were healthy in game one do you really think they would be healthy the whole series ? I think kubina would hit Callahan so hard his hip would explode. Stamkos would just do himself in! Kucherov would probably carry the bolts the whole series and the 2004 bolts take the series in 6 games.

Wouldn't matter to me, 2004 had more than enough firepower to play the 2017 team head on.

Marty St.louis > Kucherov
Lecavalier < Stamkos
Richards > Johnson
Stillman > Palat
Modin > Callahan

Top end talent favors the 2004 squad especially with how inconsisent the 2017 team is, depth goes to the current squad, especially on defense since this was before Boyle broke out. 2004 has better goaltending but the single biggest difference is that 2004 group worked much better in unison and bought into Torts system moreso than the current team does in Cooper.

2004 for me.

2017 lightning way more speed but puck possession and battle in the corners 2004 lightning would be better. Hedman and vasy would have to play like gods to beat the 2004 lightning.

2004 for me.

kucherov still getting better ppg avg is identical last year to msl's 2004 number 1.15
taking kucherovs numbers he is playing 2 to 3 minutes less per game in last two playoffs vs marty. Yet marty had 9 goals 15 assists in the 2003-2004 and kucherov had 10-12 for 22 points in 26 games and 11-8 in 17 games 8 goals which were even strength !! marty had 5 in 2003-2004....clutch had 17.5 and 21.6 shooting percentage where marty had 15.5 nothing to laugh about:)

kucherov generates more shots 2.59 to 2.71 and 3.32 for clutch

is not a landslide here I think kucherov will pass marty in time...

for me is can vasy step up into the true number one shut down world class goalies to even consider this?

Also vinny had a top level better year then stamkos

so is easy 2004 wont stay that way though for long

2004 would also have a significant edge in special teams, so I think it'd go 7 in 2017 rules and they'd probably win in 5 in 2004 rules.

2004 in 6 games. 2017 wins the first 2 games and then concedes the last 4 in a row because 2017 manages only 6 goals the rest of the way because no one else but Stamkos and Kucherov and Hedman have scoring ability worth a damn and muster a <10% power play and fans call for Cooper to be fired

Oh yeah and Bulin takes Vasy's juice box and 2017 gives up 3 or more goals in all 4 losses

I think it should be 2015 vs 2004. I think 2015 is the best iteration of the Lightning ever.

2015 was the best on ice product and to think we had an Stamkos who was off and a Drouin on the 4th line/bench the enitre year.

But man 2017 should've been hands down the best Lightning team ever, on paper the depth was insane. We were what? Voted top 5 in top-4 defense, #2 center depth, #1 winger depth and goaltending duo?

Are we talking about 2016/2017 or 2017/2018?

I was under the impression it was the latter.

Championship teams are generally referred to as their playoff year, so it'd be inconsistent to say the 04' Lightning (it certainly wasn't the 04-05 Lightning), but the 17/18 Lightning.

it was clearly a different game. i don't think they compare well, if you play by today's standards and rules, i don't think the 2004 team can come out ahead, and vice versa. kucherov (who is my favorite player) would absolutely struggle in the clutch-and-grab era. and nolan pratt would get clowned on by kucherov if he wasn't able to grab him.

both teams were built with different M.O.s and whomever was playing in their own beneficial context would win, imo.

Yeah, I thought OP meant the 2017-18 roster. It's still a top 10-12 roster in the league, even with our glaring weaknesses.
