2004
1st - Ovechkin (LW)
2nd - Malkin (C)

2016
1st - Matthews (C)
2nd - Laine (LW/RW)

You get to take two players, but they have to have the same draft spot. Which center/winger duo do you take? The 1st OA’s or the 2nd OA’s?

Malkin and Ovie are close enough in their careers that it's basically a wash, with a slight edge (imo) to Malkin. Matthews as of today is clearly better than Laine.

Went with 1st OA's.

Close.

I'm a big Ovi fan so I think OV8>Geno (not a large margin)
Laine and Matthews are equal to me as of now.

At their absolute peak yes it's basically a wash. But their careers aren't close at all, OV is way ahead.

PPG:
Malkin - 1.18
Ovie - 1.12

Trophys:
Malkin - 3 Cups, Conn Smythe, Calder, 2x Art Ross, 1x Hart
Ovie - 1 Cup, Conn Smythe, Calder, Art Ross, 7x Rocket, 2x Hart

Other than the rockets, they're pretty much as close as they get. Sure Ovies done it longer, and has been more healthy. Their impact to their team though over the course of their career is pretty damn similar.

Ones been healthy his whole career, the other misses 10-20 games on average. When healthy they're almost directly comparable players with a slight edge to Malkin. If you're talking pure counting stats Ovies better.

I don't know why that's a bad opinion. :dunno:

Whoops, thought I was voting for the year, not the pick. Accidentally voted Ovi-Matthews, but I'm switching to Malkin-Laine. And I have no issue being wrong with this pick

The poll isn’t asking ‘when they’re healthy’ it’s asking ‘who would you rather take?’

Not considering health will lead to a Bad opinion. Those 10-20 games are games where Malkin has 0 impact on the performance of his team and stretches where he was not at 100% due to injury also hurt. If you don’t have a Crosby to back him up, that could easily be the difference between regularly missing and making the post season.

But the fact that Malkin is always missing so many games is what's working against him here. I'd easily take the guy who is consistently healthy and consistently dominant.

Really would’ve been fun to see Malkin and Crosby on separate teams so we could compare a bit better.

Am I correct in thinking you are taking the player as they are right now? If you get their whole career I'm taking Ovechkin and any of the other players.

I think I'll take Ovechkin-Matthews still, but it's real close.
