Just months before the 2011-2012 regular season ended, the press had reported that NY billionaire Nelson Peltz wanted to buy the Islanders.Wang quickly came out with a statement, that the team was not for sale.

Yesterday,BD and mattyboy, were listening to Mike Francesa's radio interview with Mike Repole.Repole co-founded Vitaminwater. He sold his shares for huge bucks and is a billionaire now. They talked about his horse not being healthy enough for the Belmont Stakes and his failed bid to buy into the Mets ownership.Repole wanted to be the majority owner and the Wilpons didn't want to give up control of the franchise. They found another investor.

The interesting part for NYI fans,is that Repole said he'd like to own the Mets,NY Jets or the NY Islanders. The Wilpons don't want to sell.I can't see Woody Johnson giving up his NFL cashcow, the NY Jets.

It's good that there are local options in case Wang wants to sell.

A lot can happen in 3 and 1/2 years. Not saying this isnt good but I think Wang has no interest in selling this team until 2015. This does help with any doubts about this team leaving the area. I just cant see it happening. There is probably a lot of very rich people local to the Isles that would love to own a new york sports franchise.

Ya, thats great to hear. I suspected there'd be people interested in taking the team off of Wangs' hands if push comes' to shove.

Really? Vitamin Water revenue is only 350 mil so where is this billions coming from.

When Vitamin Water first came out, they went after some big athletes/celebs to do advertising (David Ortiz, Brian Urlacher, David Wright, 50 Cent). They offered a stake in the company because they couldn't afford to write checks for endorsement deals.

I think Wright had like a 0.5% share in the company, while Fitty had like 4%.

Needless to say, they made some loot selling to Coke.

As always, be wary of the recent-billionaire-who-wants-a-toy. A lot of the worst, flakiest owners in the league come from that background -- including Wang himself.

Getting a local owner is all fine and dandy, but where are the Wang-less Islanders going to play? The problem with NYI is owner and arena.

They will continue to play in the Mausoleum thru 2015 when the lease expires - just as Wang would have.

After that, they either come up with their own arena plans - yet another NVMC upgrade/replacement, Brooklyn, Queens, Suffolk - or they own a relocatable franchise to move or sell to the highest bidder.

It's pretty clear, after GB's repeated comments about the need for a new arena on the Island and the League's handling of the Atlanta situation that they would have no qualms about letting the Isles move.

This all assumes the arena vote fails in August. Of course, even if it passes, Wang could still decide he's had enough and sell anyway - in which case the new owners would go forward with the County's current plans.

Mike Repole will be for real. He's become a prominent horse owner in a relatively short amount of time. And he's in it to win.

If the arena plan goes through, Wang's ideal time to sell is basically right as the new arena is opening. The franchise value will be at its peak. The expected revenues will be at their all-time high. The future will be the brightest. So he'd get the largest value for the franchise he's going to get.

If they do not get the arena deal done in August i think wang will sell. i always thought that he would sell to somebody who would move the team. but with local interest there are a few places the Islanders could play, one being Brooklyn in the Nets new Arena and the other was a proposal in queens to build an arena near citifield, both are next to public transportation (Local Subways and LIRR).

options are always good

The proposal that makes the most sense to me, is putting a roof that opens and closes on the National Tennis Center in Queens.

I'd think that would cost less then building a brand new arena.

I really hope the Islanders sort out their mess. There's too much history there and too much inherent value in the team for it to be folded or relocated. Under proper management there's no doubt in my mind this team can succeed as it has in the past.
