To defend Barzal slightly, I think it depends on the situation. Sure, typically you see teams give the puck up right away to get a longer 5on3, but I think a smarter play is for the puck carrier to evaluate his options and see whether there's a guy wide open he can pass to since the opposition might also assume you're just going to hand them the puck and they get lax in coverage.

I actually remember the Pens scoring on Montreal on a similar play. Pens were already on the PP, I believe, then Montreal took another one. Montreal took for granted that the Pens would let up and just hand them the puck, but instead Crosby lifted the stick of a defender, grabbed the puck and quickly sent it to Malkin, who then quickly zipped a cross ice pass to Hornqvist to one-time it in, all because Montreal kind of let up when they saw it was about to be a 5on3.

I can't recall the play perfectly, so maybe it didn't apply. If Barzal just decided to circle around the perimeter for 5 seconds instead of handing it straight to a Lightning player, then yes, that was bad. But if he held onto it for a bit longer to see if there was a golden opportunity to score, I don't think you can fault him.

If I had to guess, it was close to 15 seconds he didn't give up the puck. To your point about teams getting lax, I even think his teammates were confused by what he was doing and didn't get into proper positions either. It was rather odd.

The position he was in confused me. Was he supposed to just give the puck to Tampa? I assumed they were not going to touch it.

If they refuse to touch it the whistle would still blow quicker than twirling around for 15 seconds though. He could've just thrown it towards the net and forced them to control it too.

I’ve watched Mayfield closely for several years now and I disagree, I find he gets pucks to the net more often then not. He use his wrist shot often looking for the tip instead of looking for the slap shot.
I’d love to see the stats recently, because it seems like the puck hasn’t gotten through most of the time, the shot he scored on from the top of the circle against Philly notwithstanding

I was able to pull the playoffs stats for the team on this from Hockey-Reference.com

Looking at all the defensemen, it turns out Mayfield and Greene are the two worst when it come to not having their shots blocked. Here are the overall numbers:

Certainly he was a rookie but he was nonetheless a regular during that season. He has played a total of 81 regular season games (20 in the AHL and 61 in the NHL). Not often a healthy scratch when you play more than 80 games! I have the impression that you forgot our famous "kid line" of that season formed by McInnis, Dalgarno and Green! If Green did not play against Montreal in 93, it is very likely that he must have been injured because he was present for the 12 of the first 13 games of the playoffs that year. Volek, who has never been injured that season, played 10 of 18 in the playoffs and 56 of 84 in the regular season.

Remember the kid line but Dalgarno was he a kid... was this post Joey Kocur at this point? Remember we got McInnis and Lachance out of the Olympics

Outsider observation watching Pulock on the PP, I think one area he really needs to improve on is getting open properly to receive a pass for a one-timer. I don't know if he's being coached that way, or if it's a learning thing, but the difference between him and some of the elite PP point men is they seem to get open constantly to be fed one-timers. Pulock just sort of drifts to the left faceoff circle and waits to receive the pass, but doesn't adjust if the lane is being locked between him and whoever is holding the puck.

He's obviously got a rocket, in terms of pure ability to shoot. But watching him on the PP, I'm not sure he's got the (for lack of a better description) high end offensive awareness to find the open spots for the passers to get him the puck for an open shot. Guys who can fire it like Weber, Carlson, Karlsson, etc. don't just have hard shots. They also seem to be able to get open in order to receive the shots in a shooting spot.

I may not always agree with your posts, but you make a very good overall observation. Pulock has sneaky lateral mobility, but its a dime-a-dozen and it usually involves him puck carrying.

He is too predictable with the one-timer, though he's beaten Vasi a few times in that spot.

IIRC, Mayfield was solid on this during the regular season with getting shots through. I also notice our forwards don't always help our D men in this regard by passing it back to the point in a tight spot.

I think it's one of those things where the eye test is really tricky because there are so many shot attempts so you naturally forget about most of them. You tend to only remember the ones that stand out, good or bad, which leads to a bit of a selection bias.

It was interesting to put together, as I realized I had some misconceptions as well. Especially with Pulock, who I think of as missing the net a ton when he actually is the best on the team at it. My guess is that is largely due to just how often he shoots, which just naturally means he'll have more missed shots overall and I apparently remember those more.

wow man, the islanders were the better team tonight. say wbatever you want to, but this series could easily be 1-1 and really game 1 should have never been on monday. there is NO reason this islander team cant win this series.

we are one of the last 4 teams left. i still believe this team can advance to the cup finals! so many debbie downers on this site. yes tampa is great but so is this islander TEAM. they are down but NOT out!

i never expect to capitalize on the pp ever 5 on 4 or 5 on 3 so thats whatever. i HATEEE that they try to make not one but 2 or
3 extra passes instead of fkn SHOOTING the puck! it is so frustrating! tbl goalie is 6’4” thats a long way for him to get down. the islanders should be going after the 5 hole on him! watch his 5 hole its open all day!

isles in 7 boyyyyy!!! lets fkn go!

EDIT: The islanders WILL WIN GAME 3!! BANK ON IT FELLAS!

prediction on game 3 correct..

isles in 7!!!
