I consider a libero to be a CB. I've always considered Maldini to be a LB as he spent most of his prime there but he was GOAT at CB later in his career too.
That's correct, but the style back then was different. one center back and one libero playing behind him.

Voting for Beckenbauer as a CB seems odd - even though I can see why one would do it.

Baresi and Moore for me.

Did Vogts play CB much? I always think of him as a right back, not least on account of 1974.

I'd have placed Alan Hansen on the shortlist.

I don't think 'easily' is ever really the case when speaking about 'greatest of all time'.

Plus the best defence of all time is going to go down as Bakker - van Dijk - de Ligt - Dumfries.

Maldini and Baresi are both at worst top 2 all time in their respective positions. Costacurta and Tassotti were both world class at the time as well.

I voted Baresi so I agree. Maldini was an alltime great as well.
Problem is that when you judge an entire backline, Costacurta and Tassoti aren't on the same level.
Blanc and Desailly were a dominant duo and complimented each other perfectly. Lizarazu is one of the best LB in history and Thuram one of the best CB, who did great at RB.
This backline dominated WC98 AND EC 00. That's an alltime achievement.

Trivia question :
How many defeats have the backline of Thuram-Desailly-Blanc-Lizarazy suffered together?
Of course, they didn't play in club together, but still, they were always starters for the NT.

Costacurta was one of the best CBs of his generation, and Tassotti was damn great as well.

I'm a huuuuuge Desailly fan. Thuram as well. But I don't think you can classify any of those guys as top 2 all time in their respective positions.

No, I don't. I classify the backline as the best ever because of the sum of talents and how they mashed together.
They played 28 games together. 21 wins, 7 draws, ZERO LOSS.
13 goals against (including 1 penalty). They were scored on ONCE during the 98 WC. TWICE in EC 00 outside the Mendieta penalty.

Another backline worth mentionning : Cabrini, Cuccureddu, Scirea, Gentile. Zoff in goal.
