Seriously, the only noticeable Canes players all game (in a positive sense) was LaRose and Murphy. Super excited about Murphy's play out there.

In the negative sense, Eric had another "Ah, **** it" game. Because its too hard to skate back for an icing after keeping Tampa locked in their zone for a good minute and a half...

Semin also had one of those games we were told about. Turnovers and lazy penalties...

Favorite part of the night was the goalie chant in the first. Apparently, I've got season tickets beside the upper zone that chants the PP/PK chants. Well, immediately after the "Garon, Garon, Garon, you suck!" chant, just one person shouts out "You're French!"

Cracked me up.

I'm not going to sit here and rip on Ellis after a game like that. He let in some softies but he also made some good saves. He won't be the solution, just like Cam wasn't the problem. This team isn't winning the game in any of the three zones. Our goaltending is doing nothing more than determining whether the losses are close.

I agree with this...

...except for the game against Winnipeg.

Doesn't matter who's in net, tonight was a bad game.

I'm about as apathetic right now as the Canes played. I'm sure the anger will set in shortly. Still can't comprehend how badly we played in a game of that magnitude.

Said it before, and I'll say it again, this team needs some veteran help both on forward and d. If not via available free agents, then by a trade or two. Unless we are content with another 10th place finish.

how has faulk been playing? noticed his icetime tonight was down from his norm...and do you expect him to put up some big points in the coming years or will murphy, mcbain, corvo, pitkanen, etc all take away from his possible offensive output?

Look, I'm not gonna panic. We were playing well before the injury bug.. it looks like we'll get most of them back soon so until then, we just need to hang in there. Tomorrow's game is crucial.

Is this a fantasy question or a real life question? Because that will affect the answer.

haha real life, I don't care about fantasy...I do follow prospects a lot and remember him in college and thought he could be a stud on offense, but seems like he has been thrust more into a shutdown role with pp time, but his focus has been more on shutting teams down than creating offense, which comes as a surprise because in college he was all offense.

Faulk's play as a whole is fine. At this point he simply doesn't have the scaffolding, in terms of team defense, to optimize his performance. As of today he's the best defensive defenseman on the team, so he's drawing assignments that keep him honest and subtract from his offensive opportunities. That situation is made even worse by the fact that guys like Sanguinetti and Jordan require major sheltering, so Faulk gets virtually no soft minutes. That would not be the case if Pitkanen and Gleason were healthy.

Long-term, I think he continues to get his points because he plays a key PP role. He's very smart with the puck, especially during a cycling, in-zone offense situation. We have a couple of other guys who can rush the puck better, and it's starting to look like Murphy might be a long-term asset in that role, but Faulk has other strengths that will allow him to stay on the PP and get o-zone faceoffs.

Right now we have too many offensive minded RHDs. Corvo will be gone in the foreseeable future, Sanguinetti will not be an NHL player for long. That leaves Faulk, McBain and Murphy. It's not hard to see McBain getting moved, leaving Murphy and Faulk as the top-4 RHDs a couple years down the road.

A few hours after you wrote this.

See now, this is where I differ from the "I rate a player's performance on the one moment that stood out during the game" crowd, as is clearly evident from this BS post. Yes, Chad LaRose scored one of only two goals in the game. And it does sound strange to say "yeah, but that's all that he did that was noticeable", mostly because it was *very* noticeable. But the kid has anywhere from 10:00-15:00 other invisible minutes of icetime...and this isn't the first game where that is true. When you come rushing to his defense with a snappy "I told you so!", it's just myopic. There are other words to describe it that I will steer clear of...

On to other things...

Joe Corvo. Joe has played some really solid, if not really good, hockey in the past few games. What do people remember? The missed pop fly that led to the GWG for Winnipeg. It was a ****** play...fair enough. But to then start bellyaching about how terrible Corvo is, it doesn't really show that you're paying attention to what matters, and that's the entire 60 minutes of hockey.

Eric Staal. I'm sick of this ****. If failing to secure the icing was the only thing he did wrong, I would merely be miffed at him for that moment of laziness. But he was a lazy floater all game...misreading plays, getting out of position, and generally not playing defense. Bag skate him. Have the entire team take their showers and sit up in the stands and watch. Make an example of him, that this amount of effort is not befitting the player deemed captain of *any* team. I'm sick of the lip service...some day that boy needs to wake up and take notice of the fact that people think he's ****ing lazy, and make it his life's goal to dispel that notion.

Ryan Murphy: See? Told ya so. (hypocrisy intended)

Looked like a team that is missing a quarter of its skaters. That's no good excuse, a very good team will find a way to come through anyway. A little letdown was bound to happen off of that road trip, and the injuries have made it worse. Lets get some guys back.

Nash did ok out there tonight.

This is exactly what went through my head when he was called out as one of two good players in the game on the Aftermath show.

The Senators can win without Spezza, Karlsson, Anderson, and others. We can't win because our defense is garbage even when healthy, our goaltending is inconsistent, and our third/fourth lines are borderline worthless

As I usually do lately: TOI for the defense.

Murphy 25:27 -3
Harrison 23:29 -3
Faulk 20:57 -1
Corvo 19:09 +1
Sanguinetti 16:40 +1
Jordan 14:25 -1

Aside from Murphy leading our defense in TOI in just his 2nd NHL game, those TOI numbers don't look totally terrible as far as balancing the play of the defense goes. It's far more efficient than playing Michal a whopping 8 minutes per game.

Also, Dwyer and J Staal were both a -4 tonight.

So what you are saying by J and Patty being a minus 4 that Skinner is very defensively responsible.
