I don't know the exact circumstances but here in Sweden if you have a job but have some kind of health issues or disabilities (that makes it very hard for you to get a new job) and there is some cut backs that prevents your company from keeping you, the tax payers can essentially pay your salary and they can keep you around. Not sure if you have anything similar over the pond for guys like Pierre?
