Its not really surprising because most 1st round picks do make the NHL so they have to be on one of the 30 teams. If you assume say 25 1st round picks makes the NHL every draft and say they play at least 10 seasons (in the NHL), then there should be 250 first round picks divided by 31 teams. Using those guess numbers, that means each team should average 8. If the average is higher it just means a higher percentage makes the NHL (or they play longer).

I think only around 50% of first rounders make the NHL as regulars.

Perhaps the Canucks' number of former first rounders being higher than average has something to do with Benning targeting them in trade and free agency, giving value to players he liked when he scouted them several years ago. He has acquired numerous players who were very highly rated when drafted but who haven't lived up to the expectations from that time.

Gudbranson, Vanek, Gagner, Burmistov, Pouliot, Sutter, Baertschi and del Zotto from the 1st rounders listed and Markstrom, Eriksson and Granlund from the 2nd's are players targeted by the current management and acquired either by trade or in free agency.

Not sure how true that is anymore.

Take a look at recent drafts...

2011
9/30 players have played less than 100 games

2010
8/30

2009
5/30
or 8/30 less than 200

2008
8/30
11/30 (less than 200, 12 less than 300)

Of course there are some that might leave for Europe in less than 10 years but then there are others like the Sedins who will play at least 17 seasons (and there are a few players like them every draft).

Again my numbers are just random guesses. Also remember for the purpose of this discussion, its 1st round pick on roster, doesn't mean they will play regularly. I.e. someone like Pouliot has been on Pens roster for 3 seasons but he hasn't exactly played that many games and not exactly "regulars" so to speak. Some of those first round picks are going to be "extras" like Pouliot will (at least at the start of the season).

That is incorrect, its already a bad draft year when a third doesnt make it to at least 200-300 games, even if you go way back to the 80s when teams didnt scout they way they do nowadays.
