Did they count NHL-only championships as Cup wins up to that point, even if the NHL champion lost in the intra-series? This is from April 15, 1931 Sherbrooke Daily Record the day after the Canadiens won their second Cup in a row in 1931.

We now consider them to have won 4 to that point (1916, 1924, 1930, 1931) and not 5, so the only explanation is a typo or they counted the 1925 NHL championship, before they lost the intra-series to Victoria in 1925. But that would mean they wouldn't have counted NHA championships prior to the intra-series because they lost to Seattle as the NHA winner in 1917.

Perhaps counting the 1919 tie as a win?
