For the seasons 1926-27 to 1929-30, NHL coaches were polled for their all-stars of the season to create all-star teams. I've posted the 1926-27 and 1927-28 teams previously. The 1929-30 teams are new to me and I don't think they have been posted here. (thanks to Pam Coburn for the article).

I think we're just missing the full 1928-29 team.

1926-27

From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, April 3, 1927, p. 41

1926-27 all star teams - Newspapers.com

No vote totals for this year, unfortunately. And the newspaper article indicates that several writers' votes were included along with the coaches.

First team
LW George Hay, Chicago
C Frank Fredrickson, Detroit/Boston
RW Bill Cook, Rangers
D King Clancy, Ottawa
D Duncan Munro, Maroons
G George Hainsworth, Canadiens

Second team
LW Aurel Joliat, Canadiens
C Frank Boucher, Rangers
RW Howie Morenz, Canadiens

G John Ross Roach, Toronto

Third team

The coaches also voted Bill Cook as the most valuable player, with 9 of 10 selecting Cook and one picking Bill Carson.

1928-29

"TORONTO, March 21 - Writing in the Globe, Bert Perry says: "Only one member of the Maple Leafs - Irvin Bailey - has been selected for the 1928-29 all-star N.H.L. team. The selection is made by the votes of the various managers in the circuit, no manager being able to vote for a player of his own team. The result of the polling shows Worters of the Americans in goal; Clancy, Ottawa, and Shore, Boston, defense; Bailey, Toronto, right wing; Morenz, Canadiens, center and Joliet, Canadiens, left wing. The highest possible vote a player can get is nine, and Clancy got 8, Worters and Shore seven each, and the rest five each. Other players and votes were as follows: Hainsworth, 2; Thompson, Bruins, 1; Mantha 5; Conacher 1; Bill Cook, 3; Oliver, 1; Ward, 1; Boucher, Rangers, 1; Stewart, 1; Hay, 2; Kilrea, 2. The Hart Trophy award for the Most Valuable Player in the league is likely to go to Roy Worters."

22 Mar 1929, 11 - The Ottawa Citizen at Newspapers.com

Goal:

1. Roy Worters 7
2. George Hainsworth 2
3. Tiny Thompson 1
Note: All votes accounted for.

Defense:

1. King Clancy 8
2. Eddie Shore 7
3. Sylvio Mantha 5
4. Lionel Conacher 1
Note: These should add up to 20, but there is an extra vote

Left Wing:

1. Aurel Joliet 5
2. George Hay 2
3. Hec Kilrea 2
Note: There is 1 missing vote

Center:

1. Howie Morenz 5

Since it's easier for me than it is for you to quote my old post, I'll repost here. Unfortunately, you need a newspapers.com subscription to read the linked article:

_____________

I found the missing GM-voted All-Star team for 1928-29!

Note that Worters did, in fact, go on to win the Hart Trophy.

To organize the data in a easier fashion:

Goal:

1. Roy Worters 7
2. George Hainsworth 2
3. Tiny Thompson 1
Note: All votes accounted for.

Defense:

1. King Clancy 8
2. Eddie Shore 7
3. Sylvio Mantha 5
4. Lionel Conacher 1
Note: These should add up to 20, but there is an extra vote

Left Wing:

1. Aurel Joliet 5
2. George Hay 2
3. Hec Kilrea 2
Note: There is 1 missing vote

Center:

1. Howie Morenz 5
2. Frank Boucher 1
3. Nels Stewart 1
Note: There are 3 missing votes

Right Wing:

1. Ace Bailey 5
2. Bill Cook 3
3. Harry Oliver 1
4. Jimmy Ward 1
Note: All votes accounted for.

I doubt that I have it. I remember looking these quite a while years ago. I will check.

Edit. Oh it has been already found

And 2nd team RW for 1926-27.

From the 1926-27 article: "Lepine does not usually start the game, but he plays center for the most part and Morenz moves over to replace Arthur Gagne at right wing."

In an NYT column on 2/20/30, John Kieran interviewed* Ching Johnson and brought up the all-star team question:

"Leaving the Rangers out of it, Ching, who are the best men on the other league teams in your opinion. Who is the best forward?"

"Well, I think I'd pick Nels Stewart."

"Count him as a centre. How about the wingmen?"

"On the wings? Lemme see. Well, I guess Dutch Gainor of the Bruins would do. He's awful tricky and deceptive. Fast, too."

"How about Howie Morenz?"

"He's different. Howie depends entirely on his speed. He doesn't stick-handle at all. You can figure Howie, but you can't figure a fellow like Gainor. You never know whether he's going to the right or left, or over or under you."

"What about Aurel Joliat?"

"Great. He's tricky, too. But if I had to pick two wingmen, I'd take Gainor and another of those Boston fellows, say Cooney Weiland or Clapper. That Clapper, he's a bird."

"At centre you'd pick Nels Stewart?"

"Nobody else. Of course they've been shifting centres to the wing and back to centre again in the last year or so, but it doesn't make much difference. Stewart and Morenz and fellows like that play either position, but I guess it doesn't matter. They're all forwards."

FWIW, he picked Lionel Hitchman as his #1 defenseman, saying he made Eddie Shore's life a lot easier. Shore was his other D pick, with mentions of Clancy, Mantha, Conacher. His goalie pick was Tiny Thompson.

* Kieran did these editorial "interviews" regularly, and they always sound like made-up dialogues to me. Perhaps he actually did talk to the players, but the intent of the column was to tell a good story.

Jim Hendy compiled all-star teams from the league's coaches and published the resulting all-star teams in Macleans Magazine from 1934-35 to 1940-41, and then again in 1945-46.

The article from 1934-35 indicates the same teams were chosen in earlier seasons, but I haven't been able to find them in the Macleans archive. They may have been published elsewhere.

Results are below in this thread. I have included point totals where specified, but not all articles included the point totals. I would also recommend reading the articles, as Hendy comments on all the players who were selected.

Where did the coaches and the writers differ?

1934-35
The writers rated Lorne Chabot the #1 goaltender, but the coaches had him 3rd at highest.
The writers rated Earl Seibert above Art Coulter, and the coaches had Coulter above Seibert.
Russ Blinco and Larry Aurie make the coaches 2nd team ahead of Cooney Weiland and Dit Clapper

1935-36
The first team for the writers and coaches was identical.
The coaches rated Ivan Johnson above Ebbie Goodfellow on the 2nd team defence.
The coaches had Art Chapman (2nd team) and Doc Romnes (3rd team) ahead of the writers’ 2nd team centre Bill Thoms

1936-37

The writers had Normie Smith as their # 1 goaltender, and the coaches preferred Wilf Cude.
The coaches had Herbie Lewis and Jimmy Ward on the 2nd team ahead of the writers’ Sweeney Schriner and Cecil Dillon

1937-38

The coaches rated Syl Apps 1st and the writers preferred Bill Cowley.
When you count votes for all positions, Gordie Drillon and Cecil Dillon finished tied in the coaches’ voting AND the writers’ voting.

1938-39

The coaches had Earl Robertson as their #1 goalie and the writers had Frank Brimsek #1
Art Coulter was on the coaches’ 1st team ahead of Dit Clapper, who made the writers’ first team.
The coaches rated Alex Shibicky as their 2nd LW ahead of Johnny Gottselig, the writers’ choice.

1939-40

Art Coulter makes the coaches’ first team and the writers’ second team AGAIN
The coaches had Gordie Drillon at 2nd team RW and the writers had Bobby Bauer

1940-41
The coaches had Gordie Drillon at 1st team RW and Bobby Bauer #2. The writers had Bryan Hextall #1 and Bauer #2.

1945-46
Harry Lumley didn’t make the writers’ teams but tied with Bill Durnan for #1 goalie as per the coaches.
Jack Stewart was only on the writers’ second team, but led all D in votes from the coaches.
Ken Reardon was a 2nd team all star as per the writers but didn’t place on the coaches’ team – Neil Colville and Babe Pratt were ahead of him.
Doug Bentley was 1st team LW according to the coaches and the writers preferred Gaye Stewart.
The coaches also had Chicago’s Bill Mosienko as 1st team RW, ahead of the writers’ choice Maurice Richard.

The player who had the biggest difference between the writers and coaches was clearly Art Coulter. The coaches had Art Coulter as a 3 time first team all star and a 1 time second team all star. The writers had him as a 4 time second team all star.

Also, here are the results of the Utility Player category, a category for which we have no real comparison in the rest of hockey history.
1934-35: Ebbie Goodfellow
1935-36: Ebbie Goodfellow
1936-37: Hooley Smith and Syd Howe
1937-38: Bob Davidson and Cooney Weiland
1938-39: Flash Hollett
1939-40: Flash Hollett
1940-41: Syd Howe
1945-46: Milt Schmidt

Very interesting information. Looks like the coaches were much less susceptible to GAA bias than the writers of that period, which makes me inclined to put more weighting on these results, at least when it comes to goaltending:

Jack Stewart being the top-rated Defenseman by the coaches in 1946 while his 5th place finish in Hart voting and 2nd Team finish in All-Star voting seemed to contradict each other is the exact sort of thing I spent way too long looking for a few weeks ago. Thanks!

A few links I have saved:

1932-33 (March 17)

1942-43 (March 24)
http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AsNAAAAIBAJ&dq=cowley all-star&pg=3281,664771
Link doesn't work, so only a date to use as a guide for a search. I used Cowley in the search as Hendy didn't return anything.
