Cecconi was a 5th rounder. He's a future first pair obviously. But seriously, I think Vala and Heatherington are underrated. Both are capable, future 3rd/low end 2nd pair guys imo. I had a 4th round grade on Vala when he came out. I'm still not sure why he went undrafted.

Shapiro has said Vala's skating is bad. Bad skating defenseman not such a good bet for success IMO. Meanwhile, the board has Smith who has already played in the NHL and Gardner who Shapiro says is a lock to be a 4th liner according to other scouts.

Saying he can't based purely off skating is like saying Robertson won't be anything more than a 3rd liner because his first step is atrocious. Vala compensates from what I've seen.

People said things like "his skating is good for someone his size" with Oleksiak. They do not say that about Vala.
