KEENELAND YEARLING SALE

DAY THREE: Today was a day for the boys. The top 11 horses sold at $500,000 or more were all colts with one exception a Tapit filly. The high price was a son to Uncle Mo who sold for $950,000 to Mayberry Farm in Kentucky who has been a serious buyer in past yearling sales. The group has spent approximately $5 million in this sale through three days.

Of the 11 sold at $500,000 or more today, three each are sons to Into Mischief and Uncle Mo.

Into Mischief
offspring have the most sold (34) in volume and the most in money spent ($18.8 million) through three days.

There have been 14 horses sold for $1,000,000 or more (three colts, 11 fillies).

Gun Runner, who is a first-year stallion, has seen 19 of his offspring sold for $6,3 million. And a late addition to the third day of the sales is Mayberry Farm just plucked down $775,000 on a Gun Runner colt!

As of now over $129,000,000+ has been spent through three days on 411 horses. Donato Lanni has spent $8.1 million as agent for Starlight Racing and they lead the money spent category.

Illinois 2021: Dates were awarded by the state's racing board today for 2021. The contentious 2020 debates will likely spill over into 2021 but let's hope for the best. Arlington needs to be saved. Idle words but that would be a catastrophe to lose such a beautiful and historic facility. Plus I enjoy the simulcast feed.

  • Arlington (Arlington Heights) has been permitted 68 racing dates from April 26 through Sept. 30.
  • Hawthorne (Stickney) has been permitted 50 racing dates from March 6 through April 25 and Oct. 1 through Nov. 30.
  • Fairmount Park (Collinsville; near St. Louis, MO) has been permitted 53 dates from April 27 through Sept. 6.
Now the tracks and horsemen among others need to finalize the issues. Easier said than done.

More on Illinois. Once again, Marcus Hersh at the DRF does an outstanding job. I just came across his article following the post above. He goes into detail on many issues and his article is worth a read. In addition, he gives updates on the two tracks that want a sportsbook on their properties.

Illinois Racing Board assigns 2021 dates; requests assurances from Churchill Downs Inc.

In another board action, Hawthorne was granted a request to reduce its December racing schedule this year, vacating the cards scheduled for Fridays. Hawthorne has begun construction work to modify its facility to house a sports book and a casino, and said limiting race days this winter would expedite the project. The ITHA said it supported that move.

Fairmount also plans to open a sportsbook and casino once the Illinois Gaming Board grants final approval.

The appreciation for what Tyler Gaffalione has accomplished especially inside Kentucky needs to be emphasized. Winning the title at Kentucky Downs, as unique a track as exists within North America, should be stressed. I made a comment a few days ago about how Corey Lanerie has earned the King of Kentucky label but now Gaffalione is the Prince; however, people have recognized his brilliance at such an early age. As a reminder Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who won the Kentucky Derby for the third time earlier this month, was 0-for-14 at the short but highly competitive meet.

The native Floridian has won riders' title at the big three Kentucky tracks in 2020: Churchill Downs, Keeneland and now Kentucky Downs in which he defeated Eclipse Award winning rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. among others.

The first Grade I of the fall Belmont meet is the $250,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational which is run on turf. The field is five. That is a brutal number for a Grade I. And Chad Brown, who has won this race five times in the past eight years, has no one entered. That does not speak well for his crop of three-year-old turf fillies.

Unless one of the Euros surprises or something unexpected happens, Antoinette (John Velazquez/Bill Mott) should win.

  • Steve Asmussen was winless on Thursday. He is two wins away from becoming the second trainer in North America history to reach 9,000 victories. His career earnings of $338.1 million is second only to Todd Pletcher's $394.1 million. Pletcher has earned over $7 million in 2020 and needs less than $6 million to reach $400 million lifetime. Asmussen has 10 entered on Friday.
    • Churchill Downs (3)
    • Indiana Grand (1)
    • Remington Park (6)
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts has now won 7,126 times which is 15 away from 6th place and tying Hall of Famer Chris McCarron.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Emisael Jaramillo began the day with a natural hat trick and added a fourth win later.
  • Luca Panici rode for the first time since self-quaratine following the Kentucky Derby and won with one of his two rides.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Reopening day: Today was not the meet opener but rather a continuation from that which began on September 1. Tyler Gaffalione leads the meet, which ends Sept. 27, with eight wins.
  • Graphics: The graphics on the simulcast feed appear to be decent but there is too much green on some displays.
Canterbury (Minnesota):
  • Record handle: Total handle of $68,388,504 for 53 days far exceeded the 2018 record of $48,142,704 when 66 racing programs were conducted.

Belmont (New York):
  • Opening day: Closing day is November 1 and then onto Aqueduct.
  • Under suspension: There are multiple high profiled riders who chose to take their suspensions which were issued earlier this summer by New York.
    • Irad Ortiz, Jr. will miss the first 10 days of the meet and be eligible to return October 4.
    • Jose Ortiz will miss September 18, 19 and 20.
    • Joel Rosario will miss September 18 and 19, the former due to a suspension and the latter due to required testing imposed by the NYRA. Each returning rider to New York must pass two tests in a five-day period.
    • Junior Alvarado will miss September 20, 24 and 25.
  • Manny Franco (8 3-1-2) and Jose Lezcano (6 3-1-1), the former a natural hat trick, each rode three winners on opening day.
  • Manny Franco and John Velazquez hooked up twice with the younger rider prevailing both times. The first time was almost similar to their battle in the 2020 Kentucky Derby with a different result.
  • Race 9: John Velazquez snapped a 24-race losing streak. His last prior win was the Kentucky Derby.
  • Race 1: Zainalarab (Javier Castellano/Chad Brown) won the opener. The winning 2-year-old filly was purchased for $1,000,000 at the 2019 Keeneland yearling sales.

  • Luis Saez went 0-for-9
  • Junior Alvarado was winless on seven mounts while he hit the board five times 7 0-2-3.
  • Handle: $9.5 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Closing day: The meet expires Saturday (tomorrow). Pimlico opens its brief meet on September 24 with the Black Eyed Susan and Preakness among he highlights on October 3.
  • Brittany Russell was 4 1-2-1 (25%/100%). She cashed checks with every starter. She is winning at a 25% clip lifetime in her young career.
  • Horacio Karamanos has 42 wins and leads his closest challenger by three victories.
  • Claudio Gonzalez will win the trainers' title which makes 10 of the past 11 for him in the state.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Race 7: Stayin' Out Late (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) debuted to victory and gave the trainer his 8,999th win.
  • Tyler Gaffalione won twice. He has a meet-leading 10 wins.

  • Chad Brown won at three tracks.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $11.4 million.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $35,000. The $.20 Pick 6 returned more than $50,000.
  • Race 8: The longest shot on the board won at 26-to-1.
  • Race 5: Magic Attitude (Javier Castellano/Arnaud Delacour), bred in Great Britain and raced in France, ran in the U.S. for the first time and chased down Antoinette (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) in the stretch to win the $250,000 Grade I Belmont Oaks Invitational.

  • Luis Saez broke through with three wins. He was 0-for-9 on opening day. He has 199 wins in 2020, second highest total in North America.
  • Manny Franco and Jose Lezcano lead the meet with four wins.
  • Junior Alvarado is an impressive 69% on the board but is just 13 1-3-5 (8%/69%). His place spot today -- he had two on Friday -- came with a 1-to-2 shot. He will not be riding Sunday due to the first of a 3-day suspension.
  • John Velazquez is fourth in money earned through two days with $140,000. However he is 1-for-13 (8%/38%). Numbers can be deceiving.
  • Ortiz Brothers: A reminder both are under suspensions.
  • Joel Rosario is due to return to ride Sunday with nine mounts.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Handle: More than $4 million.
  • Race 10: The $.50 Pick 3 paid close to $4,000.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Closing day: The meet concluded today. Laurel reopens October 8 and races into 2021. Pimlico opens its brief meet on September 24 with the Black Eyed Susan and Preakness among he highlights on October 3.
  • Horacio Karamanos (42 wins) won the riders' title with Jevian Toledo's 41 wins second-best. The closeness of the race was emphasized by Karamanos' mark the past two days in which he was 8 1-5-1. This is the 6th riders' title in Maryland for the native of Argentina.
  • Trevor McCarthy won three times.
  • Charlie Marquez, a 17-year-old bug, signed with Angel Cordero's as the agent's second client among with Manny Franco. Cordero split from John Velazquez a few months ago. Marquez will head to New York.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Edgard Zayas, Emisael Jaramillo and Miguel Vasquez are running away from the rest of the jockeys in terms of wins at the meet.
  • Luca Panici won for a third straight day since returning from quarantine related to requirements following his ride in the Kentucky Derby.
  • Current meet: This meet will close September 27.
  • Gulfstream Park West: The meet goes from October 3 through November 28. It is the final meet of the contract between the Stronach Group and Churchill Downs and this is expected to be the final year of operation as a race track for the former Calder.
  • Return to Gulfstream: The next meet will operate December 2, 2020 until March 28, 2021.
  • Sunday's Rainbow 6: Will have a minimum guaranteed pool of $800,000.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Steve Asmussen boosted his career win total to 9,002. He is chasing the all-time mark of 9,445 held by Dale Baird.
  • Steve Asmussen had 753 lifetime wins at Churchill Downs, the most of any trainer. Dale Romans, who led recently, has 748.
Arlington (Illinois):
  • Race 7: Memories of Artie (Victor Santiago/Wesley Ward) debuted to a win in a field of 11 in which there was just one other first-time runner. Ward is better than 31% with first-timers this year. Following the claiming race, the 3-year-old Ontario-foal gelding was claimed by trainer Manny Perez.
Louisiana Downs (Louisiana):
  • Stakes race day: Multiple stakes in which six of the eight races held purses of $50,000.
  • Diego Saenz won three of the stakes races and eventually was named North America's Jockey of the Week.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: Over $11 million. Woodbine is having a splendid 2020.
  • Card: Half of the 12 races held purses $100,000 or more with a million dollar race the feature.
  • Race 10: Dirty Dangle (Sheena Ryan/Ralph Biamonte) won the $135,000 Woodbine Cares Stakes on the inner turf course race for 2-year-old fillies at 5-to-1. The winning rider, who was born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, suffered a broken arm in her career debut in 2012 at Grand Prairie in Alberta but two weeks later, in her return, won. The winning horse today is named after the trainer's grandson Tyler Angle, a 2019 Columbus Blue Jackets draftee, who played last season for the Windsor Spitfires.

    OIP.AniGxwxJM2qAMn1WPLW5mgHaEK
  • Race 9: Starship Jubilee (Justin Stein/Kevin Attard) won the $1,000,000 Grade I Woodbine Mile at 5-to-1. The 2019 Canadian Horse of the Year is 6 5-0-0 in 2020. She is 19-for-38 lifetime and has earned over $2 million. Among the defeated was 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War of Will who has lost six of seven since that race. Starship Jubilee, the third female horse to win this race and the oldest horse at the age of 7 and who was once claimed for $16,000, received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Fan Duel Mile. Florida-breds have been excelling in big races at Woodbine. Florida-bred power!

  • Race 7: Count Again (Luis Contreras/Gail Cox) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes at 9-to-1. The 5-year-old gelding was unraced until his fourth year and is now 3-for-6.
  • Race 3: Credit River (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Breeda Hayes) won the $135,000 Ontario Racing Stakes as the longest shot on the board at 41-to-1. The winner paid $84.20 and was the lone first-time starter in the field; that in itself is a personal favorite betting angle. It was the trainer's 23rd lifetime win, her first graded stakes victory and first overall win since October.
  • Justin Stein (84 wins) leads the riders' title with Rafael Hernandez (81 wins) in second place. Hernandez has three more mounts which is indicative of the closeness in both winning percentages and in-the-money percentages.

Woodbine should do over $10,000,000 in handle today. This is a solid card but Woodbine has delivered throughout 2020.

The weather is ideal today in Toronto for horse racing. In a dream scenario, tracks like Arlington and Woodbine would be in the mix to host Breeders' Cup races again.

Today's updates...

  • Perry Ouzts (7,126) begins the week 15 behind Chris McCarron for 6th place in jockey wins in North America history.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Approximately $11.3 million wagered.
  • Chalk erased: Favorites lost 8 of 10.
  • Race 1: Gambling Cat (Manny Franco/Michael Maker) debuted to victory in a race for 2-year-old fillies. Franco is on a roll this meet. Kitten's Joy on turf has been known to work. Maker does what he does best, trains that lineage to win and here at 10-to-1. A Pennsylvania-bred ridden by the cold John Velazquez was the race time favorite.
  • Race 3: Second of July (Dylan Davis/Phil Gleaves) shocked the field at 68-to-1 and paid $138.50 for victory. It was his debut. Davis went back-to-back with the shortest and longest odds respectively.
  • Race 5: Two Cent Tootsie (Luis Saez/Tom Albertrani) finally broke her maiden in her 15th try, sent off the 7-to-5 favorite. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $27-large....and that was with 4-to-5 and 7-to-5 winners.
  • Race 6: Shanes Pretty Lady (Eric Cancel/Gary Gullo) shocked the field at 20-to-1 closing like the wind. It will be among the 60-year-old trainer's last wins as he will retire at the end of this month.
  • Race 7: Eric Cancel won with a 16-to-1 shot. Back-to-back bombers for the jockey who was struggling numerically in the meet's first two days. The $1 daily double paid $293.
  • Race 8: Fiya (Luis Saez/Tom Albertrani), a Maryland-bred who was purchased for $400,000, is now 5 3-1-1 and raced outside of Laurel for the first time. The times were blistering.
  • Race 9: Luis Saez won back-to-back to complete a hat trick. He began the meet 0-for-9 but after three days of racing has 6 victories to lead all riders. He rode the card today and finished 10 3-1-1.
  • Race 10: Dylan Davis scored a ht trick with his third winner. The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $49,000.
  • John Velazquez has one win in his last 33 rides since winning the Kentucky Derby. Johnny V. is 16% this year his lowest win percentage since 1997. He split from longtime agent Angel Cordero recently, too.
Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Race 1: Joe Bravo rode the winner.
  • Race 2: Joe Bravo-Kelly Breen, a hot tandem, won again. They have won three of their five this weekend. Bravo has the second most wins at the meet. Breen is dominating the trainers' standings this meet. Both jockey and trainer were born in New Jersey officially making them Jersey Boys!
  • Race 3: Ferrin Peterson, in a battle with Joe Bravo for second most wins at the meet, was the winner.
  • Race 4: Paco Lopez, leading rider at the meet, brought home a bomber at 23-to-1 which was the longest odds.
  • Race 5: Ferrin Peterson won.
  • Race 6: Paco Lopez won. Through six races, the top three riders at the meet each won twice.
  • Race 7: Paco Lopez with the riding triple.
  • Race 8: Jose Ferrer snapped the big three's streak of winning each race.
  • Race 9: Jose Ferrer went back-to-back. All nine races were won by four riders.
  • Race 10: Pirate's Punch (Jorge Vargas, Jr./Grant Forster) won the $155,000 Grade 3 Salvator Mile. The well-traveled winner has raced 17 times covering 10 tracks and 6 states.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: Luca Panici rode a 10-to-1 shot home to victory. Four racing days since the Kentucky Derby and four winning racing days for Panici. Kendall Condie, a native of Utah and a former jockey, won as a trainer for the ninth time in his career.
  • Rainbow 6: The carryover will be $592,000+.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Turf: Beautifully maintained.
  • Race 2: Jason Barkley, the winning trainer, is 31 years of age and a graduate of the University of Louisville. He once worked as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito but also dealt cards in a New Hampshire casino of all places. He returned to the horse game assisting Joe Sharp.
  • Race 3: Crazy Sexy Munny (Tyler Gaffalione/William Morey) won easily at less than even money. Her lifetime mark is 22 11-3-2. She is mostly a synthetic race horse running at Golden Gate where she has eight wins but got beaten badly at Arlington (a different type of synthetic) in her most recent start. She has hit the board in 12 of her past 13 with the Arlington clunker -- her debut at that track -- the exception.
  • Race 4: Steve Asmussen expanded his track record lead with his 754th lifetime win at Churchill Downs. Dale Romans, who led recently, has 748. Asmussen won for the 9,003rd time in his career.
  • Race 6: Johnny's Fireball (Gabriel Saez/Phil Bauer) hung on for victory in his third try but first-time starter Ethical Judgement (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh), a $170,000 purchase and son to Honor Code, rallied to make it close and at 10-to-1 earned my interest for next time out.
  • Race 7: Steve Asmussen expanded his track record lead with his 755th lifetime win at Churchill Downs. Dale Romans, who led recently, has 748. Asmussen won for the 9,004th time in his career.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: Lady Speightspeare (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Roger Attfield) won the Grade I $250,000 Natalma Stakes. She is 2-for-2 lifetime and received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The 80-year-old trainer, who is from England and won this race in 1993 and 2013, is in both the U.S. and Canadian Halls of Fame. The filly was purchased privately by Charles Fipke who owned among other fillies Forever Unbridled among other Grade I winners.

  • Race 8: Mark Casse trained winners in three straight races.
  • Race 7: Gretzky the Great (Kazushi Kimura/Mark Casse) won the $250,000 Grade I Summer Stakes and with it received an invitation to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. The winner paid $6.80. Kimura won a Grade I for the first time. He is a native of Japan and won the 2019 Eclipse Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in North America. Casse is a member of both the U.S. and Canadian Halls of Fame. Gretzky the Great has won his past three races in four career starts, is a son to Nyquist and was purchased for $295,000 by a partnership involving Eclipse Thoroughbreds and film producer Gary Barber who has a lengthy history within horse racing.

  • Race 5: Emma-Jayne Wilson, originally a third place finisher, lodged an objection against original winner Rafael Hernandez who was eventually DQ'd to third. Elevated to first was David Moran and a $40.20 winner.

New York is lively today. Five favorites have bitten the dust through seven races.

The absence of the Ortiz brothers opens it up.

Gretzky the Great wins the Summer Stakes but IT IS under review. If it stands, Gretzky the Great will go to Keeneland and the Breeders' Cup.

Take into consideration that the horse is green. Stewards should factor that.

There is much to be debated but while the jockey has to be able to maintain a steady course, the horse is green and at no point did the runner up have placement hindered.

The Volatile - Vekoma matchup that was hoped in the male sprint division will come to naught. Volatile has been retired due to injury. He will stud in 2021 and based on his lineage should be as successful there as he was on the track.
