Strals is a good d man, but his time has come. He was a non factor last year.

Shattenkirk got bought out simply for cap reasons. You wait and see the kind of year he has here. Everyone will be pleasantly surprised.

An injured Stralman as he was last year is still miles better than Shattenkirk. If he was actually good and bought out simply for cap reasons why did he not get another big contract??? Teams should be lining up for this guy no? Instead he picks a stacked offensive team for dirt cheap to try and increase his value.

Easily, Stralman was the only plus player out of Florida last night with nearly 20mins of ice time, put Shattenkirk in the same role and he'd have been minus for sure. Hedman is going to struggle heavily babysitting this guy.

Stralman has been slowly falling off for years so I don’t really care about the injury. Maybe he can be a bit better than last year but I’m still not expecting much and one game sure as hell isn’t changing my mind.

But yes Stralman might be better than Shattenkirk we’ll just have to wait and see.

Strålman was a non factor last year because he was fricking INJURED! He fought a double sports hernia from late November onward. Had surgery May 1st to repair both. Before his injury, he and McDonagh were terrific as the shutdown pair and as the interim top pairing for the month Hedman was injured. Stråls was mostly not extended because of cap issues.

Look, I'm not trying to downplay Shattenkirk's abilities. He and Strålman are two different kinds of defensemen. Shattenkirk is a classic offensive defenseman and PP specialist. Healthy Strålman is a defensive defenseman who is great at puck possession and is a PK beast. Different!

Florida was willing to take the risk of overpaying Strålman (and yes, I agree that they overpaid, even if it's just for 3 years) because they already had THREE offensive defensemen in their top four and desperately needed someone who could, you know, actually defend! After tonight, it's certainly looking like they're getting a healthy and thus effective version of Strålman which is exactly what they've been needing.

And that is why, back on July 1st, 2014, we were willing to pay Strålman $4.5 mil AAV for 5 years when he only had 13 fricking points his last season with the Rangers. We wanted a solid, puck moving defensive defenseman who could hold down the fort while Hedman rampaged through the other team's villages.

The thing about Stralman is he was injured a LOT, and then, after an injury, could never bring his play back up to where he would often start the season. So I have no doubt he'll be very good for Florida for a while. That's not to say he was bad, even when injured. I don't think he was. But, in recent years, he could rarely give us top-pairing level defense over the course of a full year.

I don't think of Shattenkirk as a Stralman replacement. To me, that responsibility falls more to Cernak and Sergachev, each of whom should take a step forward. Shattenkirk is more of a bonus on the roster.

He's exactly what he appears to be: a hired gun, here for exactly one season, trying to earn himself a big payday somewhere else. The team is using Shattenkirk's skill, on the cheap, while Shattenkirk uses the skill of the team, each for their own benefit.

If we are playing the Stralman injury card then we can't forget Shattenkirk was also injured for his tenure with the Rangers.

I guess this will be a wait and see. Im just saying most of you will be pleasantly surprised by Shattenkirk.

That is an absolutely valid point about Shatty being injured for a good part of his time with the Rangers. Must have been as frustrating as hell for him so it's no wonder he's wanting to prove something.

I'm simply saying that he and Stråls are two different kinds of defensemen and both kinds have an important role to play on any hockey team.

I hope Shatty does have a great season with us. After all we all just want to win. :DD

I think the Shatty signing was a good one. He makes the Lightning better. I wouldn’t mind flipping he and Serge at some point though. We weren’t keepin* Stralls anyway.
