Im sure it just their kids. Some bring them and some dont(to be the runners). Its a long event so I doubt many kids would be able to sit patient like that (which is why more of them dont bring there kids)

the son of one of my family's friends was the runner for the Senators when the draft was held in Nashville. I'm not sure how he got chosen, but he got a free jersey and a hat out of the deal.

It was probably some kind of contest with a minor hockey association in Ottawa.

Every team that hosts the draft can set the criteria for what kids can be runners. Some places it can be random volunteers, team sponsors children, youth hockey leagues, and oddly enough, in the case of LA, all the kids were chosen by Michael Jackson.
