I am aware that this is not going to happen, and is purely a hypothetical exercise.

When I was thinking about it last last night it really came down to two options for me in either Vlasic or Karlsson, and I could make decent arguments for both.

Vlasic- one year less left on his contract and a smaller cap-hit. But is a significantly worse player, provides basically nothing of value on the ice, and quite a bit older. Would be a UFA at 39.

Karlsson- Much better player, has a significantly better chance to bounce back to elite form. Though signed for a year longer, at a significantly higher cap-hit. I also personally don't see him coming back to form to make that cap-hit worth it. Would be a UFA at 37.

While I sided more towards Vlasic, I feel the difference in cap-hit made me want to choose Karlsson, yeah Vlasic is objectively and subjectively trash, but I feel a 7 million cap-hit is an easier pill to swallow than an 11.5 million cap-hit. Especially 5-ish years down the road.

I also provided an other option if anyone doesn't think it should be between these 2.

Vlasic's one of my favorite Sharks over the past decade or so. I'm probably one of the few people who wore a Vlasic jersey to games.

I would rather scratch him and send Meloche or Claesson out there for five minutes a game, currently. He contributes nothing already, and there's five more years to go after this one.

Vlasic. That money could easily help fix our forward situation. D is fine w/ Simek, Ferraro, Knyzhov, Burns, Karl, and someone like Claesson or Meloche or perhaps Pasinchuk even.

Vlasic money alone could get us 3 solid defensive minded defensemen to play along side karlsson, burns and maybe merkely.

I'd hope that they'd use the 7 mil to get help up front honestly. Simek-Karlsson, Ferraro-Burns in your top four. With Knyzhov in there looking solid for a 3rd pairing, they would only need a veteran 6/7 to act as a buffer. More money to be spent up front.

Oh i am not advocating to do this, just showing how far the 7 million could be spread and the easiest way to do that is by putting it on the defense.

Vlassic. He is by far the worst defenseman on the team and arguably our worst player. Only Jones can compete with him there. Getting rid 9f Vlassic could let us bring in forward help, preferably someone who could do something with Karlsson's passes.

It’s Vlasic and then Jones for me. If EK was signed to say 8M, we’d still complain but not nearly as much. If Vlasic was signed to say 2.1 (Simek contract) we’d still be complaining a lot. Vlasic is not good anymore.

When I saw that thread title I was sure the options would be Jones and Vlasic. Quite surprised to see Karlsson and then other, not Jones. Regardless, the answer is Vlasic, and there is simply no other choice.

Before this year I wouldve said Jones probably. Vlasic had those good playoffs and Jones had been awful. Its now clear that Vlasic isnt coming back, but Jones might actually be serviceable and its the sharks D thats the issue.

Vlasic easily...Karlsson still contributes, and that 7M you save from getting rid of Vlasic can be used to help out Karlsson via another forward he can pass to + a defensive defenseman that can play alongside him. Vlasic is a 3rd pairing PK specialist making 7M for another 5 years after this one...oh and he comes across as a pouter and a quitter. It's an easy decision.

You compliance buyout Vlasic, and I think the team could be a legitimate competitor. That's how bad that contract is.

The Jones contract can be a regular bought out, or you could even survive with him as a backup since it's 'only' 3 more years. There's minimal savings on a Vlasic buyout.
