I'm probably the 2nd most vocal Ryan Callahan supporter but J.F.C man it's not a wonder this guy never gets any power play time. The first thing he does is stage himself 5 feet in front of the goaltender and stare at the puck during the cycle. You're not screening the goaltender, you're not in a position to put home an in tight rebound, you're not in a position to get a good pass, you're sure as hell not crashing the crease with your back turned. You're not really doing anything. I feel bad for him due to how much hard luck he's had but I'm starting to become more and more convinced that he's in fact luckier than hell to even have scoring chances at all.

The guy has been doing this for years. You literally park your ass in front of the net and wait for the puck to come to you. And in the last PP he's just free wheel skating as if he hopes a pass will come to him directly in the slot
To be fair that’s most likely what the coaches have told him to do and not his decision or interpretation of what a good PP is.

If that's the case then what is the end game of that strategy? If they want Callahan shooting then they'll need a better place than high in the slot. We've seen Callahan score, what maybe 3 goals in the last 3 years that were more than 5 feet from the blue paint? Most goals he scores are in tight no differently than Gourde. Either it's been so long and they've forgotten how to use Callahan or they've got some kind of plan we don't know about it.

God bless him but Callahan's accuracy goes down the toilet beyond 3 feet of the goaltender and needs about 10 shots before he gets either a dangerous scoring chance or goal from that distance. Now 1 out of 10 isn't bad. But the problem is that Callahan is the kind of guy who isn't going to find twine until the 9th or 10 shot and it takes him about 4 games to get 10 shots at all and not all of his shots are created equally.

Fun thinking about this team playing 10 of 11 at home at the end of Feb/Mar against a lot of average teams. Barring something crazy happening (it has before), this team is still winning the Atlantic with relative ease. Been roading it a lot the past month and they're doing just fine.
