The Carolina Hurricanes will be trying to get back on the winning track when they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday night. Carolina had taken points in four straight games and had win two in a row before losing to Calgary on Sunday. The Hurricanes had a four-game point streak before falling Sunday to Calgary 4-3 but still have won 10 of their past 15 games to move to within three points of a playoff spot. They are six points behind Pittsburgh. The Penguins had also reeled off two consecutive victories before falling at Toronto this past weekend. Pittsburgh, tied for second in the tight Metropolitan Division, split back-to-back games with a 5-3 win Friday at home against Ottawa and a 3-2 loss Saturday at Toronto.

"We know where we are in the standings. We want to win every game, get as many points as we can and try to get in the playoffs. It sucks when we lose," defenseman Dougie Hamilton said.

The Hurricanes' game Tuesday kicks off a season-long five-stop, nine-day road trip that also goes through Buffalo, New York (Rangers), New Jersey and Ottawa.

Well, we know how this one is likely to end. But if they can move past it and not let this spiral out of control, the rest of the month should be easier. Keyword being “should”, given the way this team f***s up any opportunity for progress.

We're at that point in the season that the Canes will literally have to bring it each and every game. Battle to the death mode, otherwise known as playoff mode - a mindset this team isn't accustomed to. The good teams will continue to find ways to win even when they don't bring their A-game, but there are no excuses for teams like Carolina. Bring it, or GTFO.

I'll be watching Justin Faulk tonight. I have a working theory that Faulk has played so few "big games" in his NHL career that he just plain doesn't have the ability to ramp up his play when the intensity goes up, and he just looks lost. He just doesn't have what it takes to "bring it" anymore, if he ever did.

I think we saw this a bit in the Calgary game where Ferland and Hamilton clearly had another gear, along with younger guys like Svech, Slavin, Pesce and Aho, and old-reliables like Williams. But Faulk just looked completely lost.

If he doesn't get his head out of his a$$ for a game like tonight's, I don't know what to say.
