Prospects

All about the young players preparing to enter the NHL.

After Rasmus Dahlin went all season last year as the consensus first-overall 2018 NHL Draft choice, it is quite obvious that sometimes players are too far ahead of their peers to be caught. For a while, it seemed that Jack Hughes would be a similarly advanced player whose status as his year's first-overall pick would be unchallenged. However, having studied many of the forwards touted as current first-round selections, I have come to the conclusion that Jack Hughes isn't that far ahead of...

Here’s a quick top 40. Everyone I listed I’ve seen multiple games of. There are some guys I like (Dorofeyev and some others) but I haven’t seen enough of them to properly rank them. This list is about the guys I’ve legit watched, so if I’m missing anyone that should be on this list, feel free to drop their name and I’ll check them out. Jack Hughes Kaapo Kakko Alex Newhook Kirby Dach Vasili Podkolzin Alex Turcotte Dylan Cozens Bowen Byram Matthew Robertson Trevor Zegras Anttoni Honka Peyton...

PROSPECT RANKING WRITE-UP 1. LW Alexis Lafrenière Rimouski Océanic, QMJHL [6’1”. 192lbs. Born on October 11, 2001.] Strong and fast playmaker. Always creating chances whenever he’s on the ice. Lafrenière is a playmaking power forward that plays with grit. He’s not a runaway McDavid level talent, but still worthy of going 1st overall. He’s ready for the NHL. What more needs to be said about him? Lafrenière has been the consensus top pick for quite some time, and I see no reason to dispute...

1. Alexis Lafreniere - The easiest ranking in my list. His blend of smarts, skill, speed, shot, and work-ethic is very rare. I don't think his potential is that much higher than the players than those ranked from 2-6, but I think he's almost a guarantee to hit his upside. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Tim Stutzle - The gap between the players in this tier are razor-thin. That said, Stutzle's skating and vision...
Over the past 20 days, I've conducted a set of daily polls to roughly determine who HFBoards thought were the top 20 goaltending prospects in the NHL. The requirements to be included were the goalie had to be under 25 years of age at the starting date of the first poll, and the goalie must have fewer than a total of 20 NHL games of experience. In conclusion, these are the results: #1: Carter Hart (PHI) [27.4%] #2: Ilya Samsonov (WSH) [47.7%] #3: Igor Shestyorkin (NYR) [34.7%] #4: Ilya...
Here are the top ten drafted prospects as voted on by members. 1. Elias Pettersson - Vancouver Canucks He's just a natural. Great smarts on both ends, awesome hand-eye and passing ability, controls the puck so well. No real electrifying weapons, just so very smart and so gifted, just natural instincts and knack for reading the game and creating chances. I dunno if John Tavares is a reasonable style comparison, but someone like that who hasn't got elite skating or a rocket of a shot but...
These are my top 100 rankings. They are my own. I watch a lot of hockey. I read a lot(and I have certain people's opinions that I take into account), but these rankings are from my own observations. This is the order I would draft these guys in(as of the end of February) I just finished putting this together, so I will update at the conclusion of the Memorial Cup. Please feel free to comment....especially if you see a glaring omission(I may not have seen every player - and I also don't get...

As I start to watch more games and evaluate more prospects, the lists will grow in size, much like previous years. This list will not be pinpoint accurate as I'm only in the beginning stages, so suggest some players you think I should watch more of! 1. C Jack Hughes 2. RW Kaapo Kakko 3. C Alex Turcotte 4. LW Alex Newhook 5. C Kirby Dach 6. C Dylan Cozens 7. D Bowen Byram 8. C Raphael Lavoie 9. D Matthew Robertson 10. C Ryan Suzuki 11. D Victor Soderstrom 12. LW Maxim Cajkovic 13. C Trevor...
I was looking at the past two QMJHL drafts and something very interesting came up. During the 2015-16 season four players were permitted to play in Midget AAA in Quebec even though they were still of Bantam age (14 yrs old); Xavier Parent, Samuel Poulin, Xavier Simoneau and Olivier Desroches. It is fun to compare them to their peers now a couple of years later. Parent first caught attention when he killed Pee-Wee AAA posting 113 points in 30 regular season games and was even dubbed the...
2019 NHL Draft Rankings 1.0 My first rankings of the 2019 NHL Draft Class, and I try to do 3 each year. If you wanna see some of my mock drafts that I have made you can go to my website right -> here <- I really like a lot of the prospects in this years class, and I hope I helped to let you know about some of my favorites. Sorry if my descriptions aren't great, I'm not very good at them, but I continue to try to do them lol. 1. Jack Hughes C U.S National U18 Team (USDP) Although I see some...

MY TOP 31 DRAFT 2019 I did this last season too. My main purpose is to watch these kids play, form my own opinion -- stick my neck out if you want -- and carefully create my own ranking, so that I can look back at it in 2-3 years, 5 years and even 10 years and see what I got right and what I got wrong and learn from it. A few comments to start with: * Players not ranked have not been considered, basically. I have mostly viewed the international tournaments, the Hlinka, 5 nations and the...
2019 NHL Mock Draft 1. New Jersey Devils - Jack Hughes This is a no-brainer. With New Jersey, the are holes everywhere and for them it is about taking the best player available. Hughes is a 5’10, 168 lbs centre who could play on the wing as well. He is a crafty playmaker with an elite skating ability, elite hockey sense and elite puck handling ability. With the US U18 National Team he put up 86 points in just 41 games. NHL Comparison: Mitch Marner 2. New York Rangers - Kaapo Kakko Another...
1. NJD Jack Hughes | The HH duo is the best the franchise has ever had. 2. NYR Kaapo Kakko | Their run on European's continue. I think he'll be a Center in the league. 3. CHI Alex Turcotte | Strome and Turcotte is the 1-2 punch down the middle for the next decade. 4. COL via OTT Dylan Cozens | MacKinnon-Cozens is the 1-2 punch they've needed since Sakic-Forsberg. 5. LA Kirby Dach | Dach-Vilardi-Kupari is a trio you can build around. 6. DET Bowen Byram | The Wings get their #1 dman...
I know its early and this will change and get longer and longer as the season goes on but for now these are my top 55 guys I've watched and read up on of about 75. The other 20 I didn't like enough to put in this ranking yet as I don't see them going in the first three rounds come draft day. It is OHL heavy as a) it's a very strong OHL class and b) I have watched the OHL the most. In my opinion this will be one of the deepest classes in recent memory, especially at the top. 1Alexis...
It's unusual to write the annual write-up on Russian draft-eligible prospects in the situation we all are in: a lot of uncertainties in the world of hockey (and not only hockey) and, obviously, in terms of the draft too, as we don't even know for sure when and how it will be held. No U18 WJC, no conclusion in league play-offs, no combine, no U20 NT camp — all of that makes it pretty complicated, as for me it's always been important to evaluate a prospect outside of his league and "comfort...
