Seriously. An expansion team with 23 players that have never played together before are currently 1st place in the Western conference near midway through the season. Everyone, myself included predicted them as a bottom 5 team in the league. Every expansion team that has ever come into the NHL has had embarrassingly bad records their inaugural years no matter who they drafted and signed in the offseason. Is Vegas a top team? A middle of the pack team getting some good puck luck? Or are we...
Currently, there are only 10 active players who have ever scored 100 points in a season: -Joe Thornton -Sidney Crosby -Alex Ovechkin -Evgeni Malkin -Connor McDavid -Patrick Kane -Nikita Kucherov -Claude Giroux -Nicklas Backstrom -Eric Staal However, with the increased scoring this year, there are several players currently on pace to score 100 for the first time: -Johnny Gaudreau (age 25) -Leon Draisaitl (23) -Nathan MacKinnon (23) -Mikko Rantanen (22) -Blake Wheeler (32) And a few others...
Before the season started, everyone on here trashed George McPhee for picking a horrible roster. He was considered a joke on here and nobody thought the team could even come close to the playoffs. Are his expansion picks completely redeemed at this point (and are people willing to admit they were wrong)? He was widely considered a bottom-3 GM to start this season but could easily win GM of the year. Then there's Gerard Gallant, as a coach he's definitely gotten the most out of his players....

Just read the thread about the 2015 draft comparing it to the 2003 draft, both extraordinary but 2015 already looks to better with many players on track for Hall of Fame careers. So I went and looked at the 2003 draft, this class is now at 1000 games give or take 100 games so their careers are pretty much defined as they are close to retirement though there are some if they play 4-5 more years at a good level might make the difference. So who is Hall of Fame bound and who isn't? Here's who...
Kopitar playing in his 12 season (leading scorer in 10) for LA Kings is having his best season yet. He currently has 80 points (29 G 51 A) and has 29 point lead on the second LA kings scorer Drew Doughty (51 P). His most common linemates are Dustin Brown (48 P, third leading scorer) and Alex Iafallo (25 P, undrafted rookie). Their last season leading scorer(Jeff Carter) got injured in the start of this season in which he played only 16 games. Their second line center was most commonly Adrian...
Thinking about the high turnover in NHL head coaches (leading all professional sports leagues), I did a bit of a back-of-the-napkin math on NHL head coaches and their tenure with a given team who made the Stanley cup Finals over the past 30 years, and here's the breakdown: Note that this represents how many years the coach has been with that specific team, not overall experience. So Pat Burns, for example, made the SCF in his 1st year coaching the Canadiens (lost) and won the SCF his 1st...
As of this season, Alexander Ovechkin must score 237 goals in order to better The Great One's all time goalscoring record. In this thread I do some back of the envelope calculations to estimate with what probability that will happen, and plot the results. Key assumptions: I assume that he will play 5 more seasons. One could of course assume more or fewer. There are two main sources of uncertainty with this calculation: how many games will he play, and at what rate will he score. In each...
I've had an idea about changing the offside rule for a while now - I can't remember exactly when I first had it, and I may have seen it somewhere else. If this has been proposed before, feel free to post a source so it can get credit. Essentially, what I am proposing is a dynamic blue-line, very similar to offside in soccer. The offside line would no longer always be the blue-line, but would instead be a line parallel to the blue-line located where the furthest back defender is. The...
