"Rumor Central: Zinovjev’s departure from Team Russia not drug related A rumor is circulating around Russia that Zinovjev’s departure from Russia’s national team may not have been because of “traces of marijuana†found in his blood. According to a reliable source, rumor has it that Team Russia’s GM Anatoly Bardin kicked Zinovjev off the team because the young forward refused to sign with Bardin’s Russian club Avangard Omsk, who are this season’s Super League champions. Bardin has had a bad streak with some players who refused to bend to his will, including the infamous cases of Alexander Svitov (Columbus Blue Jackets), Stanislav Chistov (Anaheim Mighty Ducks) and Kirill Koltsov (Vancouver Canucks) enlistment in the army, as well as the “arranged†signings of goalie Anatoly Tarasov (Montreal Canadiens) and Artem Chernov (Dallas Stars), who at the time of their “transfers†to Avangard were both very strong and desirable players in the Russian Super League. It would not be a big surprise that the young forward, who has been known to have an attitude problem, to clash with the dictatorial Bardin. The doping tests were not IIHF sanctioned, but were instead conducted by the Russian national team under the control of the team GM - Bardin. Bardin himself said that the team would not be punished in any way, as Zinovjev did not yet play in an IIHF sanctioned match before being sent back to Russia. Maybe Zinovjev is at fault, but the rumor does a solid logical basis, especially considering Bardin’s past track record."
