Well then the cap hit is $3M for this year and then effectively $1M over the next two years. If we can fit the extra $1M in this year, no cap hit transfers to next year. If we can't fit the full $1M, the remainder is charged against our cap next year and we must be under the cap by the remaining amount.

I doubt it will be that big of a deal, especially with some money coming off the books next year. I'd wait for confirmation either way though since it is odd that TG would get something Devils related wrong.

For example, if the upper limit is $64,300,000, teams can exceed it by $4,822,500 in performance bonuses. Any performances bonuses in excess of that total do not fall into the cushion and are counted as part of the team's cap payroll.

Any performance bonuses actually earned at season's end (ie. for games played, awards, all-star teams, etc.) are then added to the team's final cap payroll. The catch with the cushion is that if the bonuses earned at year's end push the team past the upper limit, the overage is carried over as a penalty the following season.

So long story short, on the NHL books, Zid's cap only counts for $3 million right now.
When that extra $1 million comes into play it can either be tacked onto this season's final cap hit or carried over to next season.

I don't consider him a 6th defenseman at all. Though I would take him over Volchenkov at this point. He's a number 7 on most teams though, could be a number 6 on a depleted defensive corps.

I think he is the clear #7 whether we trade Volch or not. And he brings the add bonus of providing some fwd depth.

Though I would not mind him as a #6. From what I've seen he is a capable player.

I liked his return cause he is a good number 7. Though he seems to be a pretty big Deboer favorite, and I just hope he isn't played constantly over a healthy Fayne and Larsson.

I dont know a single poster who has said they wanted him as their #6 guy. We like what he brings in as a stop gap player for a few games if needed. I dont see the overhype at all.

Any bonuses achieved by Zidlicky will go towards the bonus cushion. If we go over the cap because of bonuses, it's fine, we'll just receive a cap hit penalty next year.

Say we're cap compliant. And then Zidlicky's bonus kicks in, and we're over. We'd still be allowed to play and be considered cap compliant, but the amount we go over the cap would be applied to next year's salary cap. If the bonus puts us $500K over, we'd get 500K of dead cap space as a penalty in 2014. If the bonus puts us $1M over, we'd get a $1M penalty.

So for the purposes of the cap this year, this is a $3M contract. Any bonuses achieved are only factored in for this year if we're below the cap in the first place. And since it's doubtful we spend to the cap, this won't be an issue.

We had a PP last year? If I'm PSEG, definitely want a refund on that sponsorship. Kidding aside, it would have only gotten worse without Zids. As for Harrold, do not recall him getting all that much attention either positive or negative, thought he just went about his thing unnoticed for the most part.

I wouldn't have a problem with Harrold playing over Volchenkov nightly.

Why should Fayne be rotated out? He's been solid other than points last year. Mostly due to the fact of him being rotated.

But anyway, getting Zids back is a MUST(which happened) and as long as it's only 3 million(1 million bonus money notwithstanding), I'm cool with that.
