The only thing worse than rap vs metal is when the two of them fused. :Shudder:

Tribe is such a good group. I also think De La Soul are a little underappreciated overall in the hip hop community. Maybe not hard enough? Well, also they're real old at this point so I could be way off.

There was some cool rap metal in the mid-late 90s. I really liked downset. Some consider them rap/hardcore. Poor band was always compared to Rage Against The Machine especially because both were from LA and political although downset was heavier, Rage was funkier/groovier. Stuck Mojo was a good band for several years. And then bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit had some really cool elements at times. Loved Fieldy's bass playing, and Wes Borland is a really talented dude. Fred Durst unfortunately gave the band their persona.

As for De La Soul, it's funny I've spent plenty of time on the West Coast over the last few years and no one there ever got into them except hardcore hip hop fans. I think they were more of an East Coast thing. Part of the reason (I believe at least) is because they're associated with the whole late 80s/very early 90s scene and also the infamous delay of their second album plus how dark it was (De La Soul Is Dead) kinda halted their commercial momentum. That album is loved by critics but never really struck the right chord with the public. It's a fantastic album.

Tribe didn't put out their first album until 1990 and also The Low End Theory (1991) and also Midnight Marauders (1993) were more of a 90s thing and had hits like Scenario and Award Tour which still get played on radio and in bars to this day.

Thanks Pavelski! I'm really lucky in that I had friends who were into a lot of different stuff growing up and music was also very accessible here in NY with the library system and a zillion concert venues in the 90s. Also bands and artists used to be like hockey players where we'd each have a favorite and learn the stats, and always talk about them in MS and HS. Plus we all played in bands.

I looked over my list and realized that I totally forgot Sabbath and Pantera :( such will happen when you go hurry up.

There's a big generational gap in my family, so my siblings and cousins were around my age (early 20s) in the late-80s/early-90s. They got me into a lot of what I really enjoy at a very young age.

Have you ever checked out the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD?

It's a really thoughtful, well-written book covering the discographies of all the major artists in the music from 1917 to present. Dixieland, swing, bebop, free playing, and everything in between. It introduced me to a bunch of stuff I never would have been exposed to otherwise. My copy's a wreck after all the times I've gone through it front to back looking for something new, and I think you'd get a lot out of it.

Awesome, thanks-- I'll look to pick up a copy.

I've never gotten the hang of using any resource beyond word of mouth from you guys and best of lists on the internet.

No prob. Hope you get something out of it.

Message boards and best-of lists are usually how I get my listening ideas too, but this was an easy read...and I'm not an avid reader by any stretch. It's like Wikipedia in the way you go to look up one item but end up wasting a couple hours.

Donkey Shade.

I still really struggle with the more traditional side of jazz, to be honest. I sort of clicked with the Fusion/Free Jazz/Avant Garde-ish stuff first and now I'm working my way backwards, which is kind of the opposite of the way this kind of thing usually goes. This list should be useful for that.

Hm. I have a hard time ranking, so this is just in alphabetical order. Bolded are favorites though.

2pac - All Eyez On Me
36 Crazyfists - A Snow Capped Romance
Alexisonfire - "Watch Out!"
Avenged Sevenfold - Sounding the Seventh Trumpet
Big Punisher - Capital Punishment
Cannibal Corpse - Bloodthirst
Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
Counterparts - The Difference Between Hell and Home
Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
Deftones - Around the Fur
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
Gorguts - Colored Sands
Haste - The Mercury Lift
Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself
Jedi Mind Tricks - Violent By Design
Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Purity Ring - Another Eternity
Rage Against the Machine - Evil Empire
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come
System of a Down - Self Titled
Underoath - They're Only Chasing Safety
Zao - Self Titled

Yes! Haste's Mercury Lift is one of the most underrated albums even within the hardcore scene itself. Such a great album. As for Zao, I prefer Liberate, FoG, and WBaFBR all over Self-Titled, but I'm not going to knock anyone that puts any Zao on their list. Also love Jedi Mind Tricks, great list.

I think all the bolded would be in consideration for my list, glad to see some Appleseed Cast love, and if someone references them, its not usually End of the Ring Wars, but I love that album to death. Probably my favorite 90's emo record, better than SDRE's Diary IMO.
