“You get down and you go through long stretches without getting a lot of zone time or offense, you look to change things up,” DeeBoer said. “I think the changes are part of the result of how we’re playing. We’re not creating enough offensively, so you go to one of your tools as a coach and that’s to flip things around.”
The Devils are just 2-3-1 over the last two weeks following a five-game winning streak that culminated with a sweep of a home-and-home series with Pittsburgh two weekends ago. Their only two wins since then were a 5-3 win over Philadelphia on Feb. 15 in which they rallied from a 3-1 deficit and Thursday’s 3-2 victory over the Caps, in which they trailed 2-1 in the third period.
The Devils have not put together a complete game in any of those six contests and, as DeBoer pointed out, “We didn’t get it tonight. That’s for sure.”
With another game coming up at 5 p.m. Sunday against Winnipeg at Prudential Center, the Devils know they don’t have much time to recover from this one and find a way to bounce back.
“Tomorrow it’s a new day,” Kovalchuk said. “Tomorrow it’s a big game at home and then we’ve got three days off between games. So, it’s a big game for us, obviously, and we have to show up tomorrow right from the get go.”
“It’s a lot of games. A lot of nights we’re doing a lot of good things and we’ve been winning most of them. Some nights you’re going to maybe not be all there and the other team is there and it looks like it’s an uneven game and it’s really now. It’s 1-1 going into the third and they get all the breaks. But we’ve got to keep doing what we know works for us and no matter what the score is keep playing our game and try to work our way back.”
