I don’t see how this game was on Cory at all. It looks like a bunch of defensive breakdowns with an Edmonton player getting free for a tap in and the Klefbom shot which was on edge and ask any goalie and those shots duck, dip and dodge (not quite as much as Mighty Ducks 2 will want to make you believe and yes that was a Dodgeball reference).

Cory made a lot of really good saves too, along with his gaffes. Trouble was we couldn't handle their size in our end, and backed in, and they just kept throwing the puck at Cory through the the traffic. About a dozen of his saves were good ones finding pucks in traffic in that situation. Then they got a couple of bounces, law of averages. Problem was our very poor structure at least as much as Cory. And then McDavid won the game for them with three passes, two of which we just looked at.

Going down the road, we are going to have to learn to handle big, heavy, slow teams that muscle us in our own end. That means probably using our speed more, not less. It means more of the kids, less of Boyle, Hayes, etc. Go with speed and pace to beat size.

I don't know why this loss is bugging me so much but I feel most of it is stemming from Prout being in over Noesen. I just can't fathom how at any point in time that seemed like a good decision. I don't think that alone cost us the game but it was a big part in my opinion.

Oh well. The young guys played well and got on the scoresheet so I guess there's that. Zacha had a few nice chances as well.

Way too many games it is said, "Cory played great except for that one goal"

It's a real pattern.

I hate saying this off the heels of that terrific performance in Vancouver but it really can't be overlooked.

Cory lets in a bad goal a game and often does it at very bad times.

We always have terrible games with Prout in the lineup. It’s getting to a point where I might as well bet against us whenever he’s in the lineup.

Not sure it is the hardest though. Calgary isn’t exactly a world beater.

Agreed. I saw the game they had against the Pens.

I was not impressed at all as they were basically under siege much like we were against the Oilers.

I think the Devils have a better shot at pulling this one out in Calgary.

Well, they were due for a bit of a clunker. Was hoping for a birthday win celebration today.

Bizarre game, though. Complete nonsense to me that Edmonton was not guilty of any penalties, but to call one so early and swallow the whistle entirely was even stranger.

Going into this trip, I would be fine walking out with a 1-1-1 record. Pocket 2 wins out of 3 and that'd be fantastic to come back home with. All will be forgiven if they win in Calgary.

Well the Devils got the 1 and then last night the 1(loss). So you want an overtime LOSS in Calgary next? SCREW THAT! Get a win and make this a 2-1-0 trip.

^ Just so you know, MadDog....

A 1-1-1 means a Regulation Win - Regulation Loss - Overtime Loss

An Overtime win goes in as a Win in the Win Column.

His dumb penalty cost a goal.

Devils were due for a loss with such sloppy play of late.

The first 2 shifts they were pinned in and looked gassed.

He's always making stupid plays. Besides the penalty he probably cost us a second goal when the team was gassed and he couldn't clear the puck properly. Oilers regained the zone and then proceeded to score quite easily.
Another thing that's evident especially when we play against a goalie who is competent at stick handling (like Talbot) is how godawful Cory is at handling the puck. He literally has no idea what he is doing and only makes things worse for himself and the team. 90% of the time Cory plays a puck it inevitably results in possession for the other team while it's a reversal with other goalies. If Talbot plays it he helps the Oilers break out. Cory just comes in, holds it for too long and then makes a desperate pass that the forecheckers are all over or throws it along the board to the other team.

You know you suck when you’re the only player that gets penalized in a game where the referees had zero intention of calling ANYTHING. Prout is awful and is a waste of a roster spot. His stupidity on that penalty is still chafing my ass.

And I forget if it was before or after the penalty that he blatantly turned the puck over with s nice pass to an Oiler. He stinks!

I have trouble calling it a dumb penalty when they didn't call interference like that for the rest of the game. Oilers especially got away with plays a lot worse than that.

I agree with you.

The biggest issue is the 3 top 6 forwards we are now missing. Everyone is shifted up too high but we need to weather the storm and find a better way or adjust our system while they are out. Nosen should be playing and enough with the 7 D and overplaying Prout.

The 2 cross crease passes for goals were completely on Prout and Greene for allowing them. Greene’s was 2x as bad because it wasn’t even a 2-1, he just lost his coverage (early in the game tone setter). Wood really pissed me off too by going for the line change and allowing Klefbom to skate up the ice with no one around him and score the big slap shot goal the Cory might be at fault for.

Oiler fan here. The Devils look like a good, exciting team. Solid future. They just ran in to a very determined home team. Oilers were in must win mode for obvious reasons. It's going to be a good game when the Oilers are in Jersey this year.

You're right. But at this point, I'd much rather him than Kinkaid. I don't know if he is going to get back to the form of a few seasons ago, but at least I know what I'm getting from him. A solid performance with a stinker here and there. I'm ok with that. With Kinkaid, some nights I feel like nothing is getting past him and other nights I feel like every single shot is a potential goal.

To a larger discussion about Cory and his future with the team: While I still don't think trading him is a viable option, I'm definitely more open to it than I had been. We just need a better replacement option than Kinkaid.

Not to diminish a very solid game by Edmonton, but the Devils did not play well last night aside from a few players like Hall.

We also have Palmieri and Johansson out with injuries which hamper the lineup.

But congrats on your deserved win last night.
From our side, hopefully it's a better game next week.

Another Friday night loss
Now 1-3.

I may be wrong but last season we seemed to lose basically every Friday night.

At some point missing 3 top 6 players is going to catch up to you, especially when you try to replace those players with really bad defensemen.
