My friend Killion once accused a commenter of killing the dream of another commenter because the former criticized the dream team of the latter. But look who's into killing dreams now (and really killing them--not merely criticizing the players selected, but claiming the commenter is not entitled to pick the selected players). Hee, hee.

Hypocritical perhaps?. No, no my friend. I'd be one of your Graduates, a PHD from the Harvard School of Psychotropic Studies under Leary & Alpert. A controlled environment is critical in order to maximize the "dream" experience, thus the imposition of criteria, parameters.Yes man must dream, but, if he flys to close to the sun... See You On the Dark Side of the Moon. Say hi to Sid Barrett for me when you get there accompanied by your "dream team" of Aurel Joliet, Howie Morenz, Georges' Vezina...

Save a seat for me will ya?...

A few players are out of position and this is definitely more along the lines of my favorites rather than the absolute best, still would bring home the gold though. Anytime from around 2000-present

Kariya - Lemieux - Iginla
Shannahan - Yzerman - St. Louis
Fleury - Sakic - Lindros
B. Richards - Crosby - Nash

Macinnis - Pronger
Blake - Foote
Neidermayer - Weber

My take on it - Team Canada (from '87 Canada Cup onwards) based on the best aggregate / individual performances in best-on-best competition:

Shanahan - Gretzky ("C") - M. Lemieux ("A")
Yzerman - Sakic - Iginla
Toews - B. Sutter - Fleury
Messier - Crosby - Nash
Lindros

Coffey - Pronger
Niedermayer - Weber
Bourque ("A") - Stevens
MacInnis

my hockey watching memories don't stretch back farther than the mid/late 80s...

messier gretzky lemieux
kariya sakic neely
shanahan lindros iginla
lemieux carbonneau fleury
crosby (to slide in at 3C when lindros chokes) st. louis (can play both wings--this team is light on LW)

bourque coffey
pronger macinnis
stevens niedermayer
mccrimmon (playing coach, howe's roommate)

roy
brodeur
luongo (someone for roy to pick on in the locker room)

PP units

lemieux gretzky neely
macinnis bourque

kariya lindros/crosby iginla
sakic coffey

PK units

lemieux carbonneau
bourque stevens

messier fleury
pronger macinnis

thanks for bumping. now that some time has passed, my LW depth isn't so shallow that i would be insane to keep kariya off my team. so long, paul.

messier gretzky lemieux
MSL sakic neely
benn lindros bertuzzi (january 2002-march 2003 only)**
lemieux carbonneau fleury

** only in regulation games. in elimination round games, my third line is benn-crosby-iginla, so the two spare forwards are

coffey bourque
pronger macinnis
stevens doughty

spare pair: keith niedermayer

roy
brodeur
luongo (someone for roy to pick on in the locker room)

PP units

lemieux gretzky neely
bourque macinnis

kariya lindros/crosby iginla
sakic coffey

PK units

carbonneau lemieux (claude)
bourque stevens

messier fleury
pronger doughty

but is it time yet to find a place for mcdavid on this team?

Canada
going purely on favourite players and not who I think would make the best team canada (because that'd be no fun) and also ignoring positions for the most part

Paul Kariya- Wayne Gretzky - Eric Lindros
Sidney Crosby - Mario Lemieux - Steve Yzerman
Mark Messier - Joe Sakic - Jarome Iginla
Brendan Shanahan - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury

Ray Bourque - Scott Stevens
Scott Niedermayer - Wade Redden
Rob Blake - Adam Foote

Felix Potvin
Martin Brodeur
Thought you were not going to pick who you thought would make the best team Canada?

In my lifetime? That's essentially a collection of the greatest hockey players who ever lived.

Three equal scoring lines and one shut-down line

Forwards

Bobby Hull - Jean Beliveau - Guy Lafleur (Guy plays with his idol)
Robataille - Gretzky - Bossy (Wayne setting up Bossy for about 100 goals in 80 games)
Mahovolich - Lemieux - Howe (Gordie was getting on in age in my lifetime, but still dominating)
Gainey - Bobby Clarke - Carbonneau (I know Carbonneau was a centre, but I need Clarke)

Defensemen (fun fact: all six shoot left... no big deal)

Coffey - Orr (They are both fast enough to back-check if caught on a rush)
Robinson - Bourque
Potvin - Savard

Goal
Patrick Roy (three time Conn Smythe winner)
Bernie Parent (two time Conn Smythe winner)
Martin Brodeur

Coach: Scotty Bowman

Captain: Beliveau
Assistants: Lemieux, Clarke

Moore Beliveau Bathgate

Orr Harvey
Bourque Potvin
Robinson Pilote

Hall
Plante

Sometimes, there is certainly an advantage to being older. Putting together the best players from three countries couldn't beat this line up. Might be a fun exercise to try though.

Glad to see Savard among your defensemen. He gets forgotten sometimes, but he was simply unreal at reading the ice and making the right play.

Serge has one of 16 Conn Smythes on the team. I'd count Hart, Norris, Vezina and Art Ross Trophies too, but that'd take too long.

Just a quick try:
Krutov-Larionov-Makarov
Sundin-Forsberg-Jagr
Ovechkin-Fedorov-Bure
Stastny-Stastny-Stastny (the 4th line is moreless for fun, somebody could come with better)

Fetisov-Kasatonov
Lidstrom-Karlsson
Golonka-Chara

Hasek
Tretjak

I know it's cheating with number of countries little bit ;) (still would love to add Selanne somewhere..maybe nobody would notice :) )
It was easier fir me than putting together Canadian lineup from my lifetime (too many players I don't like and don't want on that team).
