going purely on favourite players and not who I think would make the best team canada (because that'd be no fun) and also ignoring positions for the most part

Paul Kariya- Wayne Gretzky - Eric Lindros
Sidney Crosby - Mario Lemieux - Steve Yzerman
Mark Messier - Joe Sakic - Jarome Iginla
Brendan Shanahan - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury

Ray Bourque - Scott Stevens
Scott Niedermayer - Wade Redden
Rob Blake - Adam Foote

Felix Potvin
Martin Brodeur

I gonna try to build an actual team rather than an outright all-star team:

Lemieux Gretzky Lafleur
Messier Yzerman(1) Bossy
Kariya Crosby Iginla
Shanahan B.Clarke(2) Neely

Potvin Robinson
Bourque Park
Pronger Stevens (hide the women and children!!!)

Roy
Brodeur

(1) Sakic would work here as well
(2) Trottier would work here as well

My "hockey watching time" goes back to the early 1990s:

Mario Lemieux - Wayne Gretzky - Jarome Iginla (Iginla does the dirty work)
Paul Kariya - Mark Messier - Martin St. Louis (speed!)
Sidney Crosby - Joe Sakic - Steve Yzerman (two-way skill and hard work)
Brendan Shanahan - Eric Lindros - Cam Neely (ouch!)

Scott Stevens - Raymond Bourque
Chris Pronger - Al MacInnis
Scott Niedermayer - Rob Blake

Patrick Roy
Martin Brodeur

PP1: Lemieux - Gretzky - Iginla - MacInnis - Bourque
PP2: Crosby - Messier - Yzerman - Blake - Sakic

PK1: Messier - St. Louis - Stevens - Bourque
PK2: Sakic - Yzerman - Pronger - Blake

Howe played for the US. Born and raised in Detroit.

right. i totally knew that too. brainfarted and changed niedermayer to howe after i picked mccrimmon as my seventh d-man.

howe does have dual citizenship though... but then i guess i'd probably put hull somewhere on my team too (and if i have hull, i'd have to have oates, this would get complicated).

anyhow, changed back:

I would go with actual performance as I remember it. I remember only Gretzky's last seasons and I am not going put him on my lines over prime Lindros.
Starting with 1994....

St. Louis - Lemieux - Iginla
Kariya - Lindros - Fleury
Shanahan - Sakic - Smyth
Doan - Crosby - Nash
Gretzky

Stevens - Bourque
MacInnis - Pronger
Weber - Niedermayer
Blake

Since '82-83

Lemieux- Gretzky- St. Louis
Messier- Crosby- Yzerman
Shanahan- Sakic- Iginla
Lindros- Gilmour- Fleury

Bourque- Coffey
MacInnis- Pronger
Stevens- Niedermayer

Roy
Brodeur

Had a hard time deciding whether to include Lafleur, Trottier, Bossy and D. Potvin... I think they had too many of their most productive seasons before I was born, they just feel a bit before my time. I don't remember watching them play, except Trottier in a checking role and Lafleur after his comeback (just vaguely remember his final season)

Since the mid 90's ish, when I really started paying attention to hockey. Based on the players at the best they performed as I remember them.

Heatley - Sakic - Iginla
Tanguay - Crosby - Nash
Shanahan - Yzerman - St. Louis
Kariya - Lemieux - Fleury
Gretzky

Macinnis - Pronger
Neidermayer - Regehr
Foote - Blake
Stevens

I'd question Frank Mahovlich here. He may have been great in the NHL and WHA but when he had to raise his game in the 72 and 74 summits he was awful - a complete and total flop.

When did players like Pierre Ilote, Dickie Moore, Jean Beliveau, etc play for Canada?

I guess I interpreted the OP differently than you. The OP was asking us to "choose a Team Canada made up of only player you saw play in your lifetime" They didn't necessarily have to have played on a Team Canada. If that was the case nobody who played prior to 1972 would be chosen.

You have a valid point about the Big M I suppose. Hard to leave off a player with so much skill.

Fun n' all picking an All Star Team from "your lifetime" however I think it would be a better idea to pick only players that represented their countries (be it Canada, the US, Sweden or wherever) in International Play. You could even divide it up, as theres a disparity generationally as well as in quality in comparison say between Olympic Selections & Spenglers, World Championships & Canada Cups etc. A leaner-meaner criteria. All time Canada Cup Team (including the 72 Summit Series) and so on. Just sayin... there seems to be some confusion here.

That's a pretty good team, pappyline. We're pretty close in age, so we saw pretty much the same players. I'd go along with your team, except I would put Sawchuk on there instead of Hall. But close enough that I won't bother to pick my own team.

Well Mahovlich was near the end of his career when Team Canada came along, so I wouldn't penalize him much for that.

And since this is a fantasy Team Canada, why should those of us who saw NHL players as long ago as the 1950s (or perhaps earlier in a few cases) be forced to cut our fantasy short by eliminating players who never had a chance to play for a real Team Canada?

My friend Killion once accused a commenter of killing the dream of another commenter because the former criticized the dream team of the latter. But look who's into killing dreams now (and really killing them--not merely criticizing the players selected, but claiming the commenter is not entitled to pick the selected players). Hee, hee.
