If you know the stat by which these goalies are sorted in descending order, you should know why he got so much.

Don't like the fact that he only got one year, though. That makes next year's cap crunch even worse, if he breaks out.

Wins

yes i know the stat:

he finished 18th in Wins.

It is a deceiving stat for sure. But I think the cap hit for 1 year is ok. If he sucks again this season they can just not re-sign him...

Kind of surprised at the one year deal, Thought he would at least get two years.

Me too, but this gives their goalies competition.

They can try to re-sign Mason next offseason or sign Helle longterm if he steps up. See what happens.

Mason must expect to be the starter given his comments after the Flyers season ended, so will Hellebuyck play enough games to break out?

Because his team was able to be a top 10 scoring team in the league which resulted in him getting more wins than he should've?

It's nice to have those wins, but I wouldn't be so happy with the other numbers he put up.

Is the stat actually wins?

Anyway, while he wasn't very good last year, he still has a lot of potential. Good guy to keep around IMO. And he will probably be a fine backup to Mason this year.

Well there's actually 3 stats it COULD be:
1) Saves
2) Shots faces
3) Games Played

Wins would put him at 17th, and loses at 19th

I reckon Mason will be the starter in the beginning, but other than that, results should be the deciding factor at all times. That being said, they would be stupid not to give Hellebuyck his opportunities in the new circumstances. He isn't the only capable goaltender anymore who can play in the NHL.

As for how many starts he will actually get, somewhere around 35-40 is my guess. That would be a step down from last year, but if that comes with improved results, I am all for it.

Games played?

Bingo. Hellebuyck basically had an average workload of a NHL starter. That's a pretty convincing argument in a contract negotiation, even if his numbers suggest that he shouldn't have been one. The coaches gave him the starts, so how exactly are all those sloppy defensive plays that led to goals against him on Hellebuyck? Aside from Trouba and Morrissey, the defense hung him out to dry on a regular basis. How about having to play extended streaks of games at all times, even when Helle clearly needed a break? Nope, he was thrown to the wolves. He literally was a better option than either of Hutch and Pavelec, even when he wasn't on his A game.

12-3-1 2.09 .937 against the central last year. find another 10-15 starts in there and we are good.

A lot of successful goalies were in the AHL at age 23, so writing him off based on his age 23 NHL season is silly.

.910 save percentage through his first 82 NHL games. Busto. But seriously, people saying "last chance" for a goalie that just turned 24? Any idea where Scott Darling was at 24? Half the goalies in the league weren't even in the league at 23.

So now Hellebuyck is making $2.25, Mason is making $4.1, and they still have Hutchinson for $1.15 million.

Are the Jets just going to waive Hutch, or what? 3 goalies has never worked.

Hutch is AHL bound. And if he is not, it's not just Maurice who deserves to be fired.

Didn't live up to the hype.

He was brutal last season.

More like brutally inconsistent. He looked terrific in a lot of games but unfortunately when he was off he was horrible and the Jets' only other options were even worse so he ended up getting overworked. He's still really young and will figure it out. He's been pretty dominant in every league he's ever played in so it's a little soon to give up. You don't break Dryden and Miller's NCAA records if you ain't got the talent. :handclap:

This. He was really good at times but struggled badly at others. They were also trying to make major technical changes to his glove hand positioning in a compressed season with almost zero practice time. Many veteran goaltenders struggled with getting enough practice time to stay sharp, so it’s no surprise one that was in his first full season would have issues even without trying to make a change more suited for the off season.
