Very hard to call a guy the worst first round pick in the history of the game, when he hasnt even gotten a chance to fully develop yet. Lou took a risk here and everyone knew it ... he was never expected to be a sure shot ppg player more like a boom or bust type guy. Similar to Petr Sykora in the fact that if he ever can get over his injuries, he will be good. Not even the Devils worst first round pick.

Pat Falloon #2 1991 worst pick in entry draft history....
Michel Riesen #14 1997

Alexandere Daigle #1 1993 huge disappointment

Falloon was bad but far from the worst in the draft history...

Could be worse. You could have chosen Lawton instead

Flames

1991 - Niklas Sunblad 19th overall (0 points in 2 NHL games)
1993 - Jesper Mattsson 18th overall (0 NHL games, drafted between Jason Allison and Landon Wilson. Calgary somehow managed probably the worst first round pick in the best draft year ever.)
1997 - Daniel Tkaczuk 6th overall (11 points in 19 NHL games, but will he ever see the big leagues again?)

Other picks that haven't worked out according to draft position:

1994 - Chris Dingman 19th overall
1998 - Rico Fata 6th overall

Disagree. He's found a niche with the Pens so at the very least, the juries still out on him.

I can think of two Flyers' picks that were really bad. I forget the year they were drafted though. I think it was 92. Anyways, here they are:

Ryan Sittler
Jason Bowen

Ryan was drafted as a way to mend fences between the Flyers and the Sittler family. Too bad he isn't half the player that his sister is. As for Jason Bowen, he wasn't sure whether he was a defenseman or a left winger. Either way, he still sucked.

Not familiar with that story. Care to enlighten?

How about Neil Brady in '86
Dan Woodley, same year
Scissons in 90 was a poor one
Dore in 88
But for my money Volchov was the worst.

Scott Scissons 6th Pick by the New York Islanders in 1990. One of the deepest drafts ever. He played in Saskatoon for the Blades in the WHL, but never had what it took to be successful at the next level. He played one career NHL game I believe.

Good call. This guy is one of the first that comes to mind when talking about wasted picks. Drafted 6th overall in an incredibly deep draft, with players like Keith Tkatchuk, Doug Weight and Bryan Smolinski being drafted after him.

i was going to comment on falloon, as well. he definitely could have been a pretty great NHLer, but i mean...if you're going to call him a bad pick, then Lindros is just as bad. Both had enormous skillsets that were somewhat ruined by injuries.

Lindros was a dominant NHL player for a stretch, even winning the Hart trophy. Even today with diminished skills he's an above-average player.

There's not much in common with Falloon.

but for all the hoopla...would you still offer the package that landed lindros? of course not.

my point is, it's unfair to call Falloon a bad pick, because it's not like he didn't pan out. The time that he spent was pretty indicative of a pick as high as his. He showed some great scoring flare. I'd say that he was a GREAT pick..that succumbed to bad luck. Suppose Ovechkin is picked...makes his team out of camp...scores 35 goals as a rookie...scores 40 or so the next year...and then gets a career-ending injury in his third. Is he then a bust? Will we look back on the 2004 draft, and talk about what a "bust" Ovechkin was? Now, I realize that Falloon probably wasn't a prospect of that magnitude, but it's still a fair comparison.

I guess Nick Stajduhar counts as a bust but it never should have been that way. He had 86 pts in 52 games his last year in the OHL as a defenseman, and then his rookie AHL year in Cape Breton he had 38 pts in 54 games. He also won gold with Team Canada in 1994 at the WJC. He should have been a career NHLer...

...but then he got attacked in a barfight over the summer of 1995 and was never the same again. Played out his career in the ECHL. It's a shame. In all the years I've been watching hockey Nick was one of the best defensive prospects I've ever seen in London.

I think when looking at this you should look at the picks that are either first rounders or within 5 or 6 picks of a great grab.
These aren't the WORST, but bad ones I guess.

1994, #4 - Jason Bonsignore EDM. (From what I've heard he just didn't pan out, no injuries.) #5, Jeff O'Neil HFD #6, Ryan Smyth, so I guess EDM lucked out.

1991 #4 & #5, Lachance NYI and Aaron Ward DET over Forsberg PHI #6.

1990 #6 Scott Scissons NYI over Sydor LA #7 and D. Hatcher MIN #8

1989 #2 Dave Chyzowski NYI over Bill Guerin NJ #5

1988 #5 Daniel Dore QUE over Gelinas LA #7, Roenick CHI #8, Brind'Amour STL #9, and Selanne WIN #10

I think the worst first round pick is Chad Kilger pick by Anaheim in 1995. (1st round, 4th overall)

Matt Zultek - 15th overall, 1997, Los Angeles - 0 NHL games

What hurts most about that pick was that LA wanted to take Hossa who went a few spots earlier and they assumed that Ottawa was going to take Zultek. The funny thing is, at the time, the media in Ottawa was furious about passing up Zultek for Hossa. :joker:

Most of the players I chose have already been mentioned but I am singling them out simply because where they were chosen (top 6) and there lack of production in the NHL. There have been countless disappointing picks like Daigle, but aside from all the hype, he has still managed to hang around the NHL for nearly 500 games. My list (in no particular order):

1986 -NJ- Neil Brady #3
1988 -Que- Daniel Dore #5
1989 -NYI- Dave Chyzowski #2 (only player on my list with 100+ gms.)
1989 -Chi- Adam Bennett #6
1990 -NYI- Scott Scissons #6
1994 -Edm- Jason Bonsignore #4
