It would be nice to see what players the top countires will have in World Champs, and how the rosters look at the moment (without all NHL additions). I assume most contries, just like Sweden, plays friendlies with preliminary rosters at the moment.

Here is Swedens roster as it looks a the moment:

Goaltenders:
Stefan Liv, HV 71 (Detroit)
Daniel Henriksson, Luleå

Defense:
Johan Fransson, Luleå (2004 eligable)
Mats Hansson, Timrå
Magnus Johansson, Langnau
Thomas Johansson, Linköping
Sanny Lindström, Timrå (Colorado)
Thomas Rhodin, Fribourg
Ronnie Sundin, Frölunda

Offense:
Niklas Andersson, Frölunda
Johan Franzen, Linköping
Yared Hagos, Timrå (Dallas)
Jonathan Hedström, Djurgården (Anaheim)
Jonas Höglund, Davos
Magnus Kahnberg, Frölunda (Carolina)
Magnus Nilsson, Luleå (Detroit)
Niklas Nordgren, Timrå (Carolina)
Jonas Rönnqvist, Luleå (Anaheim)
Andreas Salomonsson, Modo (Washington)
Fredrik Sjöström, Phoenix Coyotes
Alexander Steen, Frölunda (Toronto)
Christian Söderström, Timrå (Detroit)

Player in bold have a really good chance to make the final roster, the players in Italic have to impress in the pre-games, and also depends on who will be avaliable from the NHL. Likly Samuel Påhlsson, Kristian Huselius and Niclas Hävelid will join from NA.

The team doesn't include players playing the final series in Sweden, and at leats three forwards will join from these teams (Jönsson, Nordström, Davidsson).

The only player I know for sure that is on the U.S. team at this point is Ty Conklin from the Edmonton Oilers.

The Swedish roster has been changed since Påhlsson, Tjärnqvist, Tärnström and Hävelid have arrived from NHL. A lot of cuts have been made, I wish we do as you do in Finland, and go with big rosters with much competition. Now there are only three (!) lines on the team, although additions are waiting from the SEL final teams, but offensive threats like Alex Steen and Niklas Nordgren could need the experience with team even if they not make the final roster. Anyway, here is how it looks at the moment (At leats according to Aftonbladet, can't find the cut anywhere eles, but they have talked to Ulf Dahlen, ass coach, so I assume it's right):

Henrik Lundqvist, Frölunda
Daniel Henriksson, Luleå

Thomas Johansson, Linköping
Ronnie Sundin, Frölunda
Thomas Rhodin, Freiburg
Dick Tärnström, Pittsburgh
Daniel Tjärnqvist, Atlanta
Niclas Hävelid, Anaheim

Jonas Höglund, Davos
Jonas Rönnqvist, Luleå
Magnus Nilsson, Timrå
Samuel PÃ¥hlsson, Anaheim
Fredrik Sjöström, Phoenix
Johan Franzen, Linköping
Jonathan Hedström, Djurgården
Magnus Kahnberg, Frölunda
Niklas Andersson, Frölunda

I think that roster looks pretty strong (the american one).
I look forward to see Dustin Brown and Ryan Malone play on the larger surface.
The only players I am unfamiliar with are goalie Alex Westlund and forward Andy Roach.

It's light years ahead of last years roster. It looks like there are at least two forward and three defensemen slots to fill, which could make things even better. Good, possibly great goaltending, a mobile, offensive defense, and some very quick skilled forwards make things half way promising.

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased. It's nice these guys want to play for their country and realize what's at stake. This is team capable of medaling IMO.

Chris Drury, Paul Mara and Aaron Miller are likely bubble guys for the World Cup Team in September, Miller and Drury both made the 02 Olympic team and should make the World Cup with a strong WC's. As we have seen with Team Canada, expect to see alot of good players commit to play in this tourney in hopes it will boost their stock for the World Cup. One look at Team USA's roster last year, in a non-World Cup year proves this, there wasn't much incentive to play for the better players.

If Dallas losses in the first round, obviously guys like Guerin and Modano wouldn't have to play in the Worlds to earn a World Cup spot, but if Calgary losses you'd better bet going to the Worlds would help out guys like Craig Conroy and Jordan Leopold earn World Cup spots.

I think both Canada and the US will have very strong teams this year because of players wanting to make make a good impression so they can be selected to the World Cup. Most years the US team is so weak that it faces regulation. Even Canada has had problems getting players in the past.

Could we see our first North American final?

I just visited your International Hockey Gang message boards and I must say that you do a great job there. Anyone from HF who hasn't checked it out should (link below). We have a good group of international posters here at HF but for the most part the international section here is subsidiary the NHL topics above. It's also great to see a "true" international board where the posters have respect for each other. The only other international message board I've really seen is at IHWC.net and some of the messages there are just so mean spirited (especially when you're an American hockey fan) that I never had the desire to post there. I've signed up to your message board and put it in my favorites so hopefully I'll make a good addition. :)

Thanks Cagney. What actually got the whole thing started was a reaction to all the flaming in the IHWC forums. Originally, we were around 15 web friends from ten countries who had a mutual interest in international hockey and wanted to learn more about other countries' players, leagues and hockey programs. We have been around since 2001, mostly in the IHWC forums which also existed after the world championship. Last Autumn, the IHWC.net didn't work properly, and we decided to create to own forum and web site. We are now 50 members from fourteen countries, and in these days up to the World Championship we are getting new members every day. Thanks for joining!
