At first I was really surprised when I saw the news, but it makes sense. As another pointed out, if we kept our current defense, likely ONLY Faulk could be exposed at the expansion draft. There is just no way in hell they expose him. Murphy still needs 35 games to meet the 70 game requirement, that means we would be sitting Murphy/Wiz in rotation. Now Murphy can get his 35 games (hopefully he doesn't get injured) and we can expose him. Francis will probably also sign or trade for a vet defensemen and expose them at the draft as well.

Taking up a contract spot that they probably want to use on free agents and prospects?

If a guy's not gonna play for you, and you won't be able to dump the salary, might as well let him try to find another team somewhere else.

I think he'd be a good fit in Edmonton. They need a powerplay QB, Larsson sure isn't going to do it. Everyone focuses on Wiz's shot, but dare I say he's a great passer and set up man from the back line.

But Wiz is a pure specialist at this point. You don't want him getting more than 12 minutes at evens with his constant feet/knee issues slowing him down. So a 1 year $1m type of commitment at most.

Francis said today wiz didn't fit with their idea of a 5-6 pair for next year. No idea what that means. I think he probably healed fine and is worth a shot. I'm annoyed the canes bought him out, I thought he was a great pickup and would fit great. They need a vet on d pretty bad. I think Francis saw the success the rookies had last year and didn't want anyone impeding the next wave this year. Or he likes something about Murphy coming into the season at that slot.
