The 1985 Jets would have won the Stanley Cup were it not for Gretzky and Messier. They were up 3-1 in the series and lost. That team was so great.
I think you're thinking of 1990 as to when the Jets were up 3-1 and lost to Edmonton. That was a great series. Everything came together for the Jets - all their role players were playing way over their heads and they were rolling along until the Oilers (especially Kurri) woke up around Game 5 or so.
In 1985, they beat Calgary 3-1 in the first round, but lost Hawerchuk in Game 3 after a vicious Jamie Macoun cross-check. After that, they were easy pickings for the Oil in round 2 - they lost 4-0.
