Yes Myers is overpaid as a 3rd pairing dman on this team, but I’m more surprised there isn’t a greater discussion of how scary his decisions with the puck were these playoffs and his poor defensive zone positioning at times. The guy scares me every time he’s on the ice.

So, if a team wants Myers to beef up their NHL roster, forego developing a quality young prospect that a team can mould and grow, and will part with a 1st rd pick (or solid young prospect) I’d be all over that if I’m Chevy.

Trouba will sign as he is a RFA. Buff showed he can help a playoff run more so than derail it. I’d be more comfortable with Poolman in the lineup. Niku can play right side. So can Chiarot. There are some options if injuries hit.

Ideally a 1st rd pick can be turned into a solid prospect like Dobson, Bouchard or Boqvist.

Oh I think plenty of people noticed. It usually doesn’t get discussed as much because it always seems to be met with a bunch of animosity. People get tired of that.

Stats will get a huge offer in FA. The only kicker is whether he signs on with a contender for cheaper to cup chase or if he just goes for the bank. Judging by him and his dad's interview they both seem to be after a Cup for him as it's something his dad could never do.

Enstrom was very good in his prime and is a very smart hockey player but at 34 and injuries happening more often because his quickness is slowing , is probably done . I will say this though , maybe his good numbers this season has something to do with playing with Buff ..... Naaaaaa , Buff is horrible !! ;)

I loved Buff this season, he started bad but after a while he finally seemed to realize what the team needs of him and started playing to that and after that point on he was an awesome D-man.

But Toby is ridiculously underrated on these boards by many people simply because he doesn't throw a big hit or physically dominate games. Watch Enström-Buff pairing at play, focus on them and what each of them is doing and then try to tell me Enström is not the defensively responsible and aware player in that pairing, who constantly positions himself so to make it possible for Buff to do Buff things. He's a very "European" style D-man, I guess if you expect big hits and generally rough play from a D-man, Toby is not your guy but if you want to minimize shots, scoring chances and goals against, then there's hardly a better man in the team for the job than Enström. Even now at this stage.

I understand some of the criticism though, he is getting older and with all his injuries etc. he really didn't look that great in 1v1 situation sometimes, but the thing here is it's always very visible to the most casual observer when Toby gets overrun in a 1v1, while the good things in his game where he excels at are basically invisible, because they don't lead in to any "events" in the game, but instead minimizes undesirable "events". I think the Jets or any hockey team for that matter really needs low-key, reliable D-men like that, they are the glue that keep defensive play together.

EDIT: lol I just realized I'm replying to a post in the Stastny thread :D Well let me add this about Stastny, I rate him highly and would love to see more of him as a Jet, but I think the only chance for that to happen is if we liked to play here so much and thinks we'll be legit contenders for the next couple seasons and he takes a big discount either in $$$$ or term (or both) to play here in order to hunt for the cup. If he doesn't, then the contract would be such that it won't really make sense for the Jets to lock up and aging veteran for long term and big money.

With the raises Helly , Trouba , Morrissey are going to get , we don't have room for Stastny . Next year Laine's raise alone is going to put a huge dent in the cap . Question , i know the cap can go up every year but can it also go down ? I realize the league is going to get a whack of expansion money but i was under the impression if revenue went down for some reason , the cap would too .

The cap can go down if hockey-related revenue goes down. I don't believe expansion fees go to HRR. Even so, HRR and thus the cap have been going up at a steady if unspectacular pace the last while even without X fees.

Some interviews with players and Chevy and Maurice.

Laine, Helle and a few others mention how much they love playing here and want to sign long term extensions. They mention the fans and how great they are.
Trouba says the sooner he re-signs, the better.
Copp's interview was really honest. Lowry's...not so much. When he says, "I'm good." Little has to stop him self from laughing.
Chipman & Co. have built a really nice team here and should be congratulated.

Its a hard question to answer, here is a scenario that might work but it involves a lot of moving parts:

Paul Stastny is willing to take a team friendly deal at $5 million for two seasons

Jets can't find a taker for Mason

Perrault, Armia and Chariot dealt (Chariot and Armia are likely to cost too much for depth)

In this scenario we need some cheap replacements for those positions:

Roslovic replaces Armia
Poolman replaces Chariot
Petan/Ves replace Perrault.

Given that we have taken a hit in forward depth Petan gets first crack as we can't afford to lose him to waivers in this situation. Ves can also use the seasoning on the farm to acclimatize himself to NA.

Here is how I have calculated the cap situation. Its tight but doable but there are almost too many moves that need to be made to facilitate this:

In this situation we would run the risk of a bonus overage but we might be able to mitigate against this be only carrying a 22 man roster when both the Jets and Moose are in WPG at the same time.

Not to disrespect your effort - but I stopped reading after the bolded. I think that is just outside the most optimistic scenario that is actually possible. Is even 3x6 worth considering as the outside limit of the best we could hope for? Or would it take 7 to get the term down to 3?

I put in the only condition that makes sense for us. Clearly Stastny may/will likely have other priorities.

The exercise was largely to show just how difficult it would be to retain him. The team would have to make a number of roster moves and he would have to be willing to take a cut both in terms of dollars and term.

As I said there are too many ifs surrounding bringing him back that I don't see it as feasible but if both parties are willing then you never know.

I cant see a non-contender overpaying for a player of his age. I think he can get 6.5m over 4 years but likely only to a contender

imo there's no way he accepts a short term 1-2 year deal. There are plenty of suitors for a top 6 C. He will be the most coveted C on July 1 (dont think JT makes it). I can see fits in STL, NJD, COL, DAL, CGY, MTL, and CAR.

Fair enough.

I think that keeping Stastny doesn't just require a large number of moves. It requires making moves we wouldn't like. If we bridge everybody we can and move both Myers and Perreault it could be done.

That still wouldn't necessarily make it the best use of the cap we have freed up but it would be an available option.

Two of Myers/Perrault/Mason would have to be moved out. We would also have to move out a solid depth piece or two. At that point our strong depth starts to look more suspect. I personally am not onboard with retaining him as I would rather keep most our depth and put a guy like Roslovic in that position and allow him to grow.

Balancing the cap will be Chevy's biggest challenge. All vets want and believe they have earned that big last contract. Balancing this against locking up all young talent will be a tightrope. At most we can have one more long term vet contract on top of Little and Buff and no doubt that will be Wheeler.

Yup the league and PA are still largely focused on seniority based pay which for professional sports is very inefficient as the older you get the less effective you are.

I would like to see the Jets stay on the forefront by optimizing performance for dollars by paying for production and impact not past accomplishments.

Mason moves out automatically after 1 more year. The other 2 would need to move this year. The first year is likely the only one with substantial bonuses but we are very tight or over with even small bonuses in the following years. So, yes, we probably still need to move 1 more player. It could be as simple as Copp out, Lemieux in or it could be a higher paid player out. Maybe Appleton replaces Armia. Petan is still available although I haven't found a spot for him.

It might make sense to move one of our top players for a bigger cap saving and a much higher return.

No matter how you slice it, we are looking at a lot of sacrifice in order to keep an aging, slowing player.

We would need to make exactly the same moves to get an established C like RNH. That might be less risky due to getting a much younger player but still painful.

Do you really think Poolman will get that much? I imagine only a mil as he has not proved anything yet with his limited playing time. Therefore, probably closer to 1mil.

Some of my numbers will be a tiny bit high and some an equal amount low. We are talking drops in the bucket here. No difference to the big picture.

Poolman had only a 1 year ELC and turns 25 in a couple of weeks. His ELC paid 925k + up to 850k in bonuses. No idea whether he collected any bonus money or not. But up to 1.2 mil is not much of a raise, especially if they are planning on him being a regular next year.

Most definitely. Wheeler will be an exception IMO. I'm just hopeful Chevy keeps term reasonable.
