I see this being like a Ladd-type situation for us. A trusted veteran that looks like we might need, but down the line we'll be glad we don't sign him.

Gotta also think, he's going to want the money. But if the Jets keep him he'll have to take a discount. Say, he takes $8-10M next year if he signs a contract and the rest (depending on the rest remaining) $1-3M per year. That's one fair way of negotiating it.

I just don't know where we have room under the cap for Stastny , he isn't going to sign for 3 million a season either . I think the absolute minimum would be between 5 or 6 million , and that's too much .

He is the 2nd best C on the free agent market with plenty of teams desperate for Cs, might even be the best C if JT re-signs with NYI. He would be leaving millions/plenty of term on the market. I would like to believe he truly sees a chance to win a cup here, but we will see.

Its a hard question to answer, here is a scenario that might work but it involves a lot of moving parts:

Paul Stastny is willing to take a team friendly deal at $5 million for two seasons

Jets can't find a taker for Mason

Perrault, Armia and Chariot dealt (Chariot and Armia are likely to cost too much for depth)

In this scenario we need some cheap replacements for those positions:

Roslovic replaces Armia
Poolman replaces Chariot
Petan/Ves replace Perrault.

Given that we have taken a hit in forward depth Petan gets first crack as we can't afford to lose him to waivers in this situation. Ves can also use the seasoning on the farm to acclimatize himself to NA.

Here is how I have calculated the cap situation. Its tight but doable but there are almost too many moves that need to be made to facilitate this:

In this situation we would run the risk of a bonus overage but we might be able to mitigate against this be only carrying a 22 man roster when both the Jets and Moose are in WPG at the same time.

I heard on the radio this afternoon that Stastny moved his family here for the playoffs and that they liked it here.

Given how seamlessly he fit in the locker room, I think there is a very good chance both parties find a way for him to stay.

Is he going to get a chance to play a top six forward role on a contender? If not he may resign here. He left Colorado for better opportunities in St. Louis. He felt he wasn't going to be used in an important role in Colorado. The money did some talking to but its my understanding the Avs were offering something similar.

Maybe the Jets start getting some discount contracts for guys chasing Lord Stanley. The guy has made 60+million playing the game already.

I want him to stay but I don’t know man, I think he’s gonna drop off pretty soon. I would prefer Chevy not risking another Little situation by overpaying a player who is declining and doing so long term. I’d rather them try using a developmental player like Roslovic, Appleton, Petan or future draft picks fit that role going forward if necessary.

If we hadn't signed Little to the extension it would be a no brainer to bring him back.

Stastny was excellent for us, but I can't see it. Not at his age and what he will command.

Probably impossible but you'd have to think Chevy has or will atleast try to dump Little to make room. Pretty disappointing year for Little.

So why would he dump him after a disappointing year where his value is low? Also if he is such a dissapointment who takes him off our hands without sending back a bad contract. Little isn't going anywhere and if you listened to the interviews Maurice was raving about his leadership. I don't think the org shares a number of fans options on this subject.

Plus I just showed a way to keep Statsny while also keeping Little and Myers for next season.

Why keep Myers tho?

I would be moving Myers in a heart beat at the draft. I am just operating in a way in which I think the org would be. Especially in light of Maurice talking up Myers a bunch today unprovoked. Given that, I have a hard time seeing them move on from him this summer.

As mentioned in other threads I would be trading Myers for a 1st plus and not even be entertaining the notion of bringing Stastny back. I just have a gut feeling that the org thinks differently so I have been trying to come up with semi realistic scenarios where its feasible. As shown above, the sheer number of moves that we would have to make to accomplish it makes me believe that even Chevy will be unlikely to pull it off. Especially considering that largest variable (RFA deals) will be completed throughout the the summer depending on arbitration dates etc...

Chevy is not going to try and dump Little. They just signed him and his new contract hasn't even kicked in yet. Not how True North operates. Little is only 30 and is easily a solid #2 center. Try finding 45 centers with better #'s then him even in an off year. $5.3 M is a reasonable salary for this, though I'd prefer 4 years instead of 6 for term length. In all honesty I think it is a bit of a pipe dream to think we can sign Statsny. I think he likes Winnipeg and is willing to sign here, but why would he give the Jets a big time hometown discount that we would need to sign him? IMO to get Statsny signed we will need to match the open market on AAV and term. Some team out there like the Habs desperate for a center likely offers something in the 7 X 7 range. We'd have to be able to swallow that again IMO to sign Statsny.
