Top prospect? Are we talking about the same guy here?

For us he is, he's a very good prospect. I don't put him far behind Guhle. Two years ago he and Charlie McAvoy made a great pairing at the WJC. Not saying he's McAvoy but Borgen's a real good dman already.

A few years ago Tobias Enstrom and Zach Bogosian made a good pairing in the NHL.

I'm not worried about losing Borgen. I think he will end up signing here after next season.

BUT

And this is a big IF but if Borgen does play out his 4 years and ends up signing elsewhere, then I really would hope we eliminate drafting from the NCAA after the first 2 rounds. It's really early to worry about Borgen leaving but hell you had people worrying about Mittelstadt the second we drafted him even though high first rounders playing in the NCAA almost always sign a contract after their sophomore seasons.

I don't believe Borgen will sign with the Sabres. I also don't care that much about a maybe bottom pairing defensemen. Just draft more defensemen earlier in the draft. It's really not that complicated.

Agree to disagree. He will never sniff our roster for anything further than a call up in an emergency.

When we do prospect ranking polls I always rank Borgen higher than most do around here. I was disappointed we couldn't get him to sign last spring, he is ready for the pros.

Here's what his coach Bob Motzko says about him.

"He's a tremendous defender, one of the better defenders in the country," Motzko said. "He's got size. He's got all the tools and he's mean. Legitimately he's a mean, tough kid, so he brings a lot to the plate for us. He can play all night. He doesn't get tired. We play him in every situation and have had him a little on the power play this year. He's much more assertive from an offensive standpoint.

Motzko, who will coach the U.S. World Junior team in Buffalo in December, said that Borgen could be in the mix for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Below are Borgen gifs from Friday's 6-3 comeback win vs Alaska-Fairbanks. Slow start, as the first two shifts for both Borgen and Peterson included lost d-zone draws and a GA:

Some of him joining attack, a check, and a zone exit:

Boarded, but stayed in the game to get a secondary assist on a late individual effort by Jackson:

Below are Borgen gifs from Saturday's 5-4 OT win over Alaska-Fairbanks, starting with some physical play that leads to a Peterson chance:

On his first minus, Borgen knocked his man to a knee off the draw, but that man still centered the puck into a coverage breakdown for a GA:

Borgen was whistled for hooking in the third period, below, and that was the lone penalty that cost SCSU, as UAF tied the game 3-3 on the ensuing man advantage.

Borgen then misses wide on this slot chance and a turnover from Ahcan follows at the other end, resulting in a second minus for Borgen and a late lead for UAF:

Lastly, the following Borgen point shot/pass fooled the arena's presentation team, as music blared preemptively on the net front tap-in miss. However, SCSU did tie it seconds later on the same shift though and won in OT, with Borgen on-ice for both but not influential on either.

@BCHockey -
#BCEagles to the power play 4:37 into regulation - Judd Peterson off for a slash.
Casey Fitzgerald stays hot and provides Logan Hutsko with a great pass through the slot for Logan Hutsko's first-career power play goal. McPhee with the second assist.
Captain Brownie! 2-0, #BCEagles!
Christopher Brown's first goal of the season came with help from David Cotton/Jake Tortora at 4:10 of the second period.
Kevin Fitzgerald knocks in a loose rebound after Jimmy Schuldt blasts one into Edquist's chest. 2-1 BC.
Jack Poehling gathers Judd Peterson's rebound and sticks it past Eddy to knot it up, 2-2. 7:50 to play in the second period.
#BCEagles head to the penalty kill for third time. Casey Fitzgerald gets called for a trip with 5:01 to go in the second. 2-2.
Will Borgen gets whacked with a boarding call - big power play for the #BCEagles with 2:51 to go in the second period.
40 seconds into the 3rd and the #BCEagles get their third chance on the power play after Will Borgen takes his second infraction of the night.
First power play goal given up this year. Jack Ahcan scores with 12:42 to go.
Huskies grab their first lead of the game - 3-2.
Robby Jackson makes it 4-2, but the goal is under review.
Goal stands. St. Cloud nets its second power play goal of the night. 4-2 Huskies with 6:38 to play.
Nick Poehling adds the empty netter. That'll do it on the front end. 5-2 Huskies win.

Kris Baker‏ @SabresProspects -
Reigning Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week Casey Fitzgerald has an assist as BC leads SCSU 1-0 End 1st.
That's his fourth point in four games played.
Christopher Brown scores his first goal of the season. BC now leads SCSU 2-0 in the 2nd.
Will Borgen (first SCS goal) and Judd Peterson (second SCS goal) draw the assists on the St. Cloud State goals that have them now tied at 2 with Boston College in the 2nd.
He’s a mobile, defensive defenseman, but worth noting that Will Borgen’s two-assist effort tonight was the fourth multi-point game of his NCAA career. He skate well and will get modest point totals as a pro, but his eval is all about what he does in defensive zone. Plenty to like in that regard.

@SCSUHUSKIES_MH -

Borgen was +1 with two assists, two minor penalties, and 1 SOG in SCSU's 5-2 win over BC on Friday night. His gifs below start with a pinch and his lone SOG:

Left Brown with too much space for a minus:

His first assist wasn't pretty, as his dump-in hit a shin and fell to Peterson who shot wide:

His boarding and holding minors:

His second assist came on the ENG:

Nothing notable to gif from Borgen in Saturday's 3-1 win over BC. It was a steady defensive performance, but quieter on the offensive or snarl fronts.

Friday's Game - St. Cloud State 5 Minnesota-Duluth 3. Both Judd Peterson and Will Borgen had an assist. Judd Peterson assist was on the fifth Huskie goal which was an empty-netter scored by Jimmy Schuldt. Will Borgen assist was on the second Huskie goal that tied the game late in the second period. The goal was scored by Ryan Poehling.

Aside from the one assist - Peterson had one shot on goal which happened in the third period - was a +1 and was 7 of 13 on face-offs. Aside from the one assist - Borgen had three shots on goal - one in each period and was a +1.

Both Peterson and Borgen both had a penalty in the game which happened back to back early in the second period with Borgens happening exactly a minute after Peterson was released from the box. Peterson penalty was a two minute hooking call while Borgens penalty was a five-minute interference call. St. Cloud State killed off both penalties.

DU kicked in St. Cloud's teeth with 4-2 and 5-1 home wins his weekend.

Borgen's stat line 2 shots and -1 in game 1. He followed that up with 1 shot, a minus 1 and a penalty for slashing that DU surprisingly didn't score on.

Here he is watching his partner getting smoked by Borgstrom on early goal in Friday's game. That sort of effort, he'll fit right in.

Below, you can find Borgen's other minus from Friday, as an Ahcan turnover left him defending an odd-man rush, and his minus from Saturday after taking his turn to give away the puck:

Excellent. Has been the Sabres most underrated prospect since he was draft.

Botterill needs to get him signed.

I've had Borgen higher than most people have in our prospect rankings since he was drafted.

I'd imagine a lot of people's opinions may change on him in the coming months if he is named to the US Olympic team...
