HockeyNews ranks NCAA talent going into the season

26. Will Borgen, St. Cloud State (BUF) – Fast-developing defenseman already has a world juniors under his belt thanks to his excellent skating.

52. Casey Fitzgerald, Boston College (BUF) – Undersized but tough defenseman has nice rushing capabilities and proved doubters wrong, getting drafted the second time around.

Baker mentioned on twitter that he thinks we will try to sign him after this year so he can develop in the AHL where our lack of depth is hilarious.

Spots are definitely available

Yeah, that's a suspension. You can't touch the officials. Only question is how long the suspension is.

Milder than the slash we saw a couple weeks ago ...

But yea .... I don't know how harsh they come down on these young guys. But by NHL standards ... that's 10 games. Laying of hand on official in an aggressive manner.

Regardless of how long, it couldn't have really come at a worse time. St. Cloud State is currently on the outside looking in at making the tournament and needs to win and he chooses a moment like that to do something so stupid.

On the plus side if St Cloud misses the tournament Borgen could sign and get in some games for Rochester.

I'm not sure that "hey, you just ****ed up royally and possibly cost your team its season, here have some money" is necessarily the best message to be sending.

He'll surely be doomed to a career of indiscipline if we positively reinforce a brief moment of anger with a contract that was coming anyways.

Him being signed this year (as opposed to, say, next year) is not a foregone conclusion. Deciding to sign him now simply because he's getting a suspension, as it seems some are advocating, is absolutely sending a bad message.

Edit: And it's not entirely about the message it'd be sending to Borgen either.

Sign him for the amerks. Bench him for the entire first period in his pro debut after sitting him down and telling him that incidents like that won't be tolerated and move on.

I hear ya. I've been thinking he'll be signed this year given our defensive depth and his advanced age relative to college year. Even though he isn't close to dominating the collegiate level, he seems like the type who'd benefit from going pro now.

Does he still get to have orange slices between the 1st and 2nd or does he have to wait til 2nd intermission?

You sign him with the promise he'll stay with the Sabres to burn one of the years off his ELC, but you inform him that the team will honor the suspension. He gets to practice with the team and then gets a few games before the end of the season.

@SabresProspects - Two game suspension for Will Borgen.

The NCHC has issued a two-game suspension to St. Cloud State sophomore defenseman Will Borgen stemming from an on-ice incident with an official during the Huskies’ game against Colorado College on Saturday, March 4. Borgen was suspended after a review of an incident at 16:04 of the third period Saturday when he was assessed a slashing minor and game misconduct.

Through the conference’s supplemental discipline review process, it was found that Borgen violated Rule 40 (Abuse of Officials) and Rule 41 (Physical Abuse of Officials) of the NCAA Rules and Interpretations. In addition, the actions were found contrary to the NCHC Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct explicitly states that student-athletes are to be respectful of officials at all times and should not demonstrably question the decisions of game officials.

Borgen will be required to serve the two-game suspension during St. Cloud State’s NCHC quarterfinal series that begins Friday, March 10 against North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Borgen is eligible to return for the Huskies, should there be a decisive third game in their best-of-three quarterfinal series on Sunday, March 12, or should SCSU advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in two games, he is eligible to return for the semifinal game on Friday, March 17.

Borgen's season ended last night. Will be interesting to see if Sabres sign him or he returns for junior season. With the Sabres lack of depth on D, I'd like to see them sign him.

Signing him should be based on his readiness to go pro and where he'd best develop. Depth doesn't matter, especially since he isn't likely to jump right into the NHL.
