Matt Cooke apologized a number of times during his career.

Then went right back out there to keep hurting people.

Matt Cooke was en exception, ive never seen a player intentionally try to hurt people so many times in one career. That hit on Savard was almost attempted murder imo.

The list of Senators with long-term injuries from the Penguins over the years continue! It's absolutely ridiculous.

Everyone is focusing on Malkin falling over top of Wideman, but I'm pretty sure the cause was the other Pens player who gets his stick under Wideman's foot and pulls it out right before Malkin runs over him.

Agreed. Without that, there's likely no injury.

Ugh, that was ugly, poor guy. I agree with SOA, he's likely played his last game as a Sen. Hopefully, he has a complete recovery from this.

It's sad when you realize he probably doesn't play another game in a Sens uniform.

I was pretty rough on Malkin when it happened because it looked deliberate. Later when I had a chance to slow motion review the play it's clear that Malkin's head was turned and he was looking to his right while going forward as he fell over Wideman. Malkin tried to support some of his own weight by spreading his legs out while he was already straddling Wideman but it was too late.

Wideman just ended up in such an awkward position reaching to coral the puck with his right skate and his left leg folded under him as Malkins weight crushed him in the opposite direction so there was no way to support additional weight. Without Malkin he probably wouldn't have been injured this badly but he might still have had a severe pull or stretch of some kind. It was near the worst possible body position for him to be in.

Speedy recovery Chris

Most of the players I've liked rooting for on this team in the past few years have been traded or are gone for other reasons (basically only Stone remains, and I really want to like Duchene), and Wideman was one of the underrated guys I really enjoyed watching on this team. This has not been a fun season so far.

Well, expected, but it sucks. Wideman was a good specialist for the 3rd pair. I advocated trading him, and still would if he was healthy, but this is the worst possible scenario for him professionally. Without a contract, out for months, and nobody knows how he'll look when he does return. It also robs us the opportunity to get a return on a guy that was probably going to UFA.

I could easily see Dorion offering Wideman a 1 year deal for similar money he earned this year ($800k). The Sens have good left D depth but not especially on the right side. Having an extra offensive guy who can play on the 3rd pairing even if it's part time isn't a bad idea at the right price. The question is if such an offer is made would Wideman take it or go to unrestricted free agency July 1 hoping for a longer/better deal which he might get elsewhere.

I'm kinda surprised it needed surgery, it must have been worse than I thought.

He's probably played his last game as a Senator. Wish him luck in the future! Maybe he can return and be an impact player in the playoffs like Mac last year :sarcasm:

If I’m Dorion, after the surgery and depending on how he progresses, I would offer Wideman a one year extension on his current one way deal at same money as this year (or a slight bump 5%).
Keeps a good depth dman in the fold and he will be worth something if a trade opportunity comes up.

It's brutal for him, because while he probably had a guaranteed 2+ year deal waiting for him as a UFA.. with this injury he will likely only be able to get a 1 year "show me" deal before anyone will commit more to him.

He's a #5-6 PMD, 2nd PP QB who we don't know will be able to move as well anymore.. which is his entire game.

He's basically out for the remainder of the season, and most likely will not get back into the lineup ............... so don't see many GMs offering him a contract without knowing if he can play as well as before the injury .......... might not be a bad idea for Dorion to offer him a contract, as you suggest, because he and his agent might see it as a "bird in the hand" type of situation.

he'll get a PTO somewhere next year but he's going to have to prove he can play before he gets a contract.

really sucks for him. as a healthy UFA he probably would have got a decent deal somewhere
