Last night is a good example of why people that know the game and are involved in the game talk about timely goaltending and the quality of goals against mattering much more. Look at the lead up to the second goal...Flyers are all over it, three or four straight shifts...puck finally leaks out and Kessel shoots it right through Elliott...it's a bad goal, at a bad time and it may have just about put the series on ice...
You see the frustration in the only relevant players too...nothing is worse for a bench than a bad goal against. Nothing has a greater impact (positive or negative).
People that latch on to things like save pct - and it's not totally worthless, but it a very minor tool in evaluation - are not considering game dynamics. Games and series are not won averages or ratios...save is the expected result, saves don't register just like shots don't register.
This is why so many lists here or fantasy leagues or whatever see people get duped because a lot of weight is placed on an ancillary stat(s)...it's all about proper talent evaluation. Elliott never passed that test...ever. Even though he is or was or whatever a save pct king...the guy is a mid to high level backup...
