A bit random, but why did we let CMac walk away in '13?

He was coming off 3 productive seasons
2010-11 82 GP, 21 G, 41 A, 62 pts
2011-12 73 GP, 20 G, 23 A, 43 pts
2012-13 40 GP, 8 G, 12 A, 20 pts

Was it some cap squeeze thing? Bad talent evaluation or team building?

I always thought he was a warrior and was clutch under pressure. Thoughts?

Wasn't it because they thought they were better than they were, and held on to guys?

The rumours at the time... he was asking $4 mil per, we offered less... so we went in separate directions. He ended up getting $3.25 from Ottawa, which is what we had been paying him.

Letting him go, was a bit of a mistake at the time... but, we are where we are, because of the mistakes...

we let him walk for the same reason we allowed Dominic Moore to walk away

they both had an over-exaggerated idea of their real value to the team, both asked for long term big money deals

bye bye

The same reason we will probably let JVR walk.....money vs worth (or place on depth chart).

Clarke was a fantastic player for us. This guy was all heart and character. I think the inept management and terrible coaching plus his injury history was the reason we bailed on him. He was asking for a long term commitment at a fairly high price at the time and the team didn't want to take that gamble. Similar to what JVR is right now except JVR will always stay healthy because he's afraid of contact or playing physical. I wanted Clarke back when he was a UFA. JVR I'm happy to see leave. Selfish player who cares more about longetivty of his career than team success.

we did not "Let MacArthur walk"

He said he didn't want to play for Carlyle and so he went to another team.
and as much as I like CMAC considering his head became glass we missed out, no pun intended. a headache.

MacArthur signed another 2-year deal at the same 3.25 cap hit after leaving the Leafs. I don't remember money being the motivator, but Carlyle certainly wasn't a fan and regularly bumped him down the lineup for what seemed like no real reason.

That's random. Had he stayed maybe he doesn't take those hits. He didn't want to play for Randy though. Very true and why he said he left.

As you show, he was declining each year and they probably saw that in not signing him they would be dodging a bullet. Turns out they were right.

I always wondered if Carlyle didn't like him and it was obvious, how come he was named one of the alternate captains during the lockout season?

I say John Ferguson Jr ranks above him in that category. Yes Nonis did dumb things like signing David Clarkson, however JFJ did the Rask for Raycroft trade.

Rask for Rayroft was really, really bad, but Nonis’ Blunders were far more numerous and just as negative. I honestly have a hard time thinking of anything positive from that era when it came to, signings, prospect development, trades and free agents

The Clarkson contract alone could have crippled any successful rebuild, fortunately Columbus saves the day there.

I just remembered how Nonis wanted to re-sign Dave Bolland and offered him a contract, however thankfully he turned it down and accepted that offer from the Panthers because of the injuries he had.

Why did we let Clarke MacArthur walk?

Just a reminder about UFA means. Unrestricted Free Agent. Leafs had no hold on him. Players can sign with any team that want. This "we let CM walk" is so non sensical.
Plus Ottawa paid too much and had too much term.

How does Burke get off the hook with his terrible UFA signings and trades. Hard to believe a rich organization could hire three incompetent in a row ....the Dark Ages in LeafLand.
