Peter Bondra (#12) and Olaf Kolzig (#37) will be the next to have their numbers retired.

Hopefully Bondra and Kolzig.
Carpenter had a great rookie season and a few more before injuries set him back, turned into a decent defensive forward later in his career, don't see him getting in.
Hunter will forever be known for the Turgeon incident, but he was the heart and soul of WSH after Stevens left. Hunter played great for the Nordiques. Over 1000 pts and 3000 penalty minutes by the time he retired.
Ovechkin is pretty much a definite.

I’d be surprised if Olie the Goalie made it, but he’s close enough to be a dark horse.

Bondra’s got a good shot. 500 goals, two 50-goal campaigns in which he won the retro-Richard trophy, some really strong scoring seasons during Dead Puck, a monster 1998, a fastest-skater title, played regularly on the PK, led Slovakia to WC gold, was arguably the greatest Caps forward pre-Ovechkin, had no controversy around him. A memorable and likeable player with a bit of “underrated because he plays for _____” going for him.

It comes down to whether Bondra makes it before Ovie retires and gets eligible. I think he does.

Olaf Kolzig: 719 games played; 303 wins; 297 losses; 87 ties; 35 shutouts; 2.71 GAA; Stanley Cup Final in 1998; 2-Time All-Star (1998, 2000); Won the Vezina; Won the Clancy.

Peter Bondra: 1081 Games played; 503 goals, 389 assists; 892 points; Played in NHL All-Star Game (1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999)

Kolzig is in that Mike Liut zone. Very good goaltender on largely mediocre teams for a decently long career. His name comes up now and again and it's not totally crazy to discuss him, but there's really no compelling reason to actually induct him. Simply too many other non-HOFers in goal that were just as good. Vanbiesbrouck, Joseph, Barrasso, Vernon, Richter...there's simply no way you leave all those guys out but elect Kolzig.

Bondra has a better chance, if for no other reason than he scored 500 goals. Still, I feel he is a long shot. Too "off the radar". Never played for a contender or had that defining playoff run, never a factor in scoring races due to very low assist totals. Less than 900 points in a pretty long career. If his career just happened to take place ten years earlier he maybe has high enough raw career numbers to get "Andreychuk-ed" into the Hall one day, but alas he doesn't. John Leclair doesn't seem to get much HOF support in the general media, and Bondra is basically a less famous equivalent.

I would induct Kolzig before all of them except CuJo and maybe Beezer/Vernon.

Bondra’s got a good shot.
He had a great shot for sure. Up there with Bure, Hull, and Luc for the best snipers in the 90s.

had no controversy around him.
Actually there was quite a bit of controversy in 98. He was specifically called out for his effort / performance during and after the Finals. This was the last time Caps got out of the second round (Ovy, *cough*).

As far as OP goes, it will be Jagr.

I don't even remember this. When you say he was called out, by who? The coach?

Well, that's still 3 names from pretty much the same era right? If the HOF suddenly decided to induct another dozen post-expansion goaltenders, then yeah he's probably a serious candidate, but that would be unexpected to say the least.

The answer here is Ovechkin because I wouldn't induct any of the others. With the standards the HHOF has for forwards don't be shocked if Bondra gets in though. I don't like that idea, because it would downgrade things even more, but nothing surprises me with the HHOF anymore.

That being said, if someone thinks this isn't Ovechkin, I'd like to know how.

Bengt-Åke Gustafsson, obviously. In double categories.

His 5 goal game with the Caps in early January 1984 gets him in as a player, and his 3D chess tank game against Slovakia and subsequent gold medal as a coach in the 2006 Olympics with Team Sweden gets him in as a builder.

I don't think Bondra gets in. Never heard him in that conversation and he doesn't have the resume Andreychuk has (while also being Canadian) so it probably never will appear either.
