No chance in H-E-double hockey sticks that any of those three make the Hall. I think you could make an argument for Tonelli (two 2nd Team All-Stars, Canada Cup MVP, Selke finalist + big contributer to Calgary's '86 SC runner-up) and Goring (Smythe, Masterson, Byng) being in the Hall, though they wouldn't be strong inductions. Given all the carping about Gillies being in, I can only imagine the conniptions that would occur with either of Tonelli or Goring.

EDIT: I would also add that as to significance to the Isles dynasty of respective players, all of Morrow, Persson and Bourne were more important pieces than the three players mentioned in the OP.

This poll is for players from the 80s Dynasty.
Then I guess I misunderstood when you mentioned Turgeon.
If it's just the Dynasty players, then I'd like to nominate Tomas Jonsson, 4 time cup winner, and only one of 3 (?) that are members of the Triple Gold Club: Cup, World Championship, and Olympic Gold. Inducted into IIHF 2000. Swedish player of the year 94-95, and currently assistant coach in Danish league.

If you're going to list fringe and poor candidates please add a none of the above option. I feel like you'll get more responses to the poll then

If Modano and Sundin are worthy of induction, then Turgeon should be in as well. In fact, it's quite surprising he's not even listed as an option, whereas you can vote for Don Beaupre in the Capitals thread

Turgeon; 1st overall pick in '87

1327 points in 1294 regular season games (1.03 PPG)
97 points in 109 playoff games (.89 PPG)

Modano; 1st overall pick in '88

1374 points in 1499 regular season games (0.92 PPG)
146 points in 176 playoff games (.83 PPG)

Sundin; 1st overall pick in '89

1349 points in 1346 regular season games (1 PPG)
82 points in 91 playoff games (.9 PPG)

I think Turgeon will be inducted in the next few years. I don't think he was as good as Sundin or Modano, but he certainly wouldn't be a bad selection, especially with worse contemporaries already in.

As for the 3 original players in this poll...why start a poll for a bunch of guys who clearly aren't HOF calibre? Is a Red Wings poll coming next where we get to choose from Kozlov, Draper, and Holmstrom?

am i wrong that stefan persson was usually considered the better all round player while jonsson was more of a specialist?

It's pretty close between the three, and I see the majority favoring Sundin and/or Modano, but I actually prefer Turgeon here. While not having as well-rounded a game, I do see some daylight between him and the other two when it comes to pure offensive talent.

A little off topic: does anyone have the accurate Islanders line combos from their cup winning years?

The passing of Bill Torrey could get the Hockey Hall of Fame voters to induct one of the remaining three qualified players from the Islanders 80s dynasty in 2018: Brent Sutter, Duane Sutter, or Bob Nystrom. If not, then Pierre Turgeon will be inducted.

The three players you listed are not qualified at all

Can you provide any examples of the voters deciding to suddenly induct somebody they'd passed over for decades due to that person being affiliated with a recently deceased honoured member?

Pat Quinn coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 1978-1982.
Eric Lindros played for the Philadelphia Flyers from 1992-2000.
Pat Quinn coached Team Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics and Eric Lindros was on the team. Won GOLD.
Pat Quinn dies in 2014. Pat Quinn and Eric Lindros are both inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.

This is a whole other story, but still, spooky!:

Former NHL player Brad McCrimmon and the KHL team he was coaching died in a plane crash in Russia in September of 2011. Oddly, three months earlier, in June of 2011 the Hockey Hall Of Fame announced the inductees for 2011, and three of the four inductees were former teammates of Brad McCrimmon in Calgary, Detroit, and Philadelphia. Joe Nieuwendyk, Doug Gilmour, and Mark Howe all mentioned Brad McCrimmon in their induction speeches in November of 2011.

Roger Neilson announces he has cancer in 1999, it spreads in 2001, he gets inducted in 2002, dies in 2003.

That is very circumstantial evidence, Lindros, Gilmour, Howe, and Nieuwendyk are all certainly deserving.

All the islanders you listed besides Turgeon are so far below HHOF level

Who on earth associates Pat Quinn with Eric Lindros? A connection that loose probably exists between almost any random inductees you could mention.

Did you notice the part where Pat Quinn and Eric Lindros were both with Team Canada and won GOLD in 2002?

Greg Gilles was inducted, so Brent Sutter will be inducted too. Don't put anything past the HHOF.

I wouldn't induct Ken Morrow. Didn't play much or score much, but won all 4 Cups with New York.

This would qualify as a "very loose connection". There's absolutely no reason to think that the HOF finally elected them both because Quinn coached Lindros for a week in February 2002.
