''One way or another, we're going to be playing next year,'' (Nashville Predators owner) Craig Leipold said. ''So if we don't come to an agreement, they won't be getting paychecks next year either.

''The sooner we know what the determination is going to be with our union, and whether we're going to be able to get a new CBA, then we can sell the excitement. But if not, we're going to sell the excitement of hockey with the hopes that anybody who wants to play will come and play for us.''

Some players (outside the NHLPA) could have an interesting decision to make this fall, if no agreement is reached.

What factors would they weigh in making the decision?

One big one, for the few who have the big contracts who many say are driving the players' hard line . . . each year lost is a year off of that big contract, the likes of which they will never see again. What was the figure, 288 or something like that under contract next year, half of that number the year after? The ones with the most to lose now are those who are blamed for digging in their heels, I would think that they also would be sweating, wouldn't you?

I was thinking more along the lines of 'what would influence someone to become a replacement player'? But you make an interesting point. It's interesting that the Sens went to court to argue that Alexei Yashin owed them a year on an unfufilled contract. The owners won't be arguing that way this time.
