It amazes me how poor the 1996 draft was. Phillips is still far ahead of the top ten in that draft. Guys like Briere have only been good for three years and Chara was a throw in during the Yashin deal. Leafs fans would argue for Kaberle, but that's really it.

For 1983, you could make certainly make a case for Hasek over Yzerman.

Also, it's Patrik Stefan, not Pavel...although that little flap did give me a good laugh...how bad of a pick would that be if they were combined :biglaugh:

Yeah for sure.
Checked out the Leafs that year, what a brutal draft, 9 players drafted, only one picked 239 Pierre Hedin has played in the NHL and that was only 3 games.

The Leafs fared better than the Habs then, our 11 picks played a combined 1 game in the NHL :help:

1989 - Pavel Bure 6th Round #113 Overall

Shortlived career but I´d pick Bure anytime over Sundin.

IMO, Kaberle is a better player than Phillps... I think he's also better than Chara. But I don't know which one is better at this point, Briere or Kaberle.

1994 Ed Jovanovski........... Ryan Smyth (6)

I think Alfredsson wouldbe the best of 1994 133rd overall. Also I think Elias was picked that year.

1981: Chris Chelios, Ron Francis, Al MacInnis and Grant Fuhr all had better careers than Dale Hawerchuk

1992: I'd take Sergei Gonchar easily over Roman Hamrlik

It's still way too early to have a definete choice for '03 but I think Staal and Fleury are pretty even. Staal had an off year this year while Fleury picked it up a lot.
Right now, though, I'd be inclined to put Phaneuf #1 with Fleury, Staal, and Vanek battling for the 2 spot.

Very good draft year overall.

Also for 92 I think some people really underrate Gonchar. He's been one of the best offensive d-men in the league for the past decade.

For 1988 you can have an interesting debate on whether Modano or Selanne had the better career.

Amazing...in the past 20 years, you're pretty much guaranteed a great player if you get the #1 overall pick. Only exception I can think of is Stefan

One word: Daigle.
Daigle, honestly was not that bad. He got pushed into the league and scored 51 PTS only behind Yashin. Daigle - Yashin - Slyvain Turgeon.. How much did you expect him to score?

His second year, again with Yashin (44 PTS).. went very well 37 PTS in 47 GP. He played a good game, again being lined with Turgeon, who was 3rd on the team in scoring with a MEASLY 19 PTs.

By his third year, he'd lost all confidence in himself and his team. With all the hype around him and the Sens not making the playoffs, he was shot. But seriously.. who could of taken that team to the playoffs? Lemieux or Gretzky would be hard-pressed.

With the pressure off, he playd another pretty good season scoring 51 PTS all season. Not great, but good.

After the long break, his 2003-2004 season was fantastic. Scoring at a career high rate, he scored 51 PTS agian, on a defensive team playing 2nd and 3rd line duties.

He followed this up with what I thought, was another pretty good season scoring 28 PTS in 46 GP on the 3rd line, agian on the Wild, a defensive minded team. I have no idea why the Wild let him go, he was doing well.

Anyway, I'm not trying to defend him by saying he was a great #1 overall pick.. but he isn't as bad as people make him out to be. He's a better #1 than Berard or Stefan.. Disappointing? Yeah.. Bad? Not even close.

He played awesome on Davos this year, scoring 61 PTS in 44 GP.. and really made Vlacav Varada look like a bum.

PS. Zetterburg in 1999 (210) > Havlat

Well... we were talking about great players, and Daigle wasn't one.

He wasn't that bad... but considering that 1993 is probably the best draft ever (excluding 1979) and the ridiculous expectations, you would be reluctant to call his career "okay".

I would still have taken Bryan Berard at #1 in '95. He was the best player in that draft. Some guys have had better careers, but marring an eye injury I still think Berard would have been one of the top 10 defensemen of all time. He's still a top 2 guy with only one eye.
