Who is/was the biggest/heaviest hitter in NHL history?

I am going out on a limb here and say that it was Scott Stevens. I witnessed him first hand and in person take down 2 of our forwards in back to back games one year. It was horrifying. God I wish he would have been a Cane!

Pronger, Neely, Clark, Stevens all have to be up there. I'd probably go with Pronger just because he was so damn huge and like Stevens not afraid to get an elbow in there.

Obviously I'm biased as a Canes fan, but it's hard not to say Scott Stevens. Shane Willis was a stud in his rookie season, which ended when Scott Stevens happened to him. He was never the same after that.

That Gordie Howe guy hit pretty hard I'm told.

I don't know if you are going to find many people that don't think Stevens is the answer. There were probably "heavier" hitters but they didn't last nearly as long as Stevens.

True. Obviously there have been lots of crash and bang types over the years, but it tends to catch up with them over time. Stevens held up better than most - he didn't miss a whole lot of games until '03-'04, when he was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome (oh, the irony). That was his 22nd in the NHL and he retired as soon as he found out the lockout was happening.

going way back, reportedly Harvey Pulford is a serious candidate.

Pulford was basically the first guy to figure out that you could influence the outcome of a game by focusing on just running around and demolishing people.

It's kind of funny to imagine those skinny little 1890s amateur players getting steamrolled by a guy who was 5'11", 200lb of muscle.
