Will be a consensus top 10 player by the time his career's finished. Incredible he's amassed the goals he has when for the vast majority of his career the league has averaged under 3 goals per game.

Beast of a hockey player and one of my personal favourites. Lives to score goals and hammer people.

He's only missing a Stanley Cup in his cupboard -- his body of work is already fantastic. He's the best goal-scorer of this generation ("generational goal scorer"), and stands a chance of breaking Gretzky's goal-scoring record. If he does, I don't see how he isn't in the top 10.

The guy has a legit chance if healthy to break 99s record that should realistically be in attainable even though he had 1 full lockout season and a 2nd shortened season... #1 is obvious based on era played is far more difficult and you know what he is going to do yet they still can't stop him. There's a PP Ovi goes to the same spot 100 out of 100 times and do you stop him... no. If that's not the greatest idk what is. The fact people are saying outside of the top 30 enjoy you favorite Pittsburgh dad YouTube videos later... keep think9ng Crosby can even be thought of within 10 of him...

He can still win the Hart trophy this year if he goes on a tear in his last 10 games, combine that with a potential cup run and conn smythe and he will be in the top 10 all time. His ceiling on the all-time list is amazing.

Ovechkin's a bit of a weird case

as a total package he's probably gonna end up in something like the 20ish range but if he can win a couple more rockets he's also gonna simultaneously have a solid case for top 10 just on the back of being the best goal scorer ever

crosby 5 points in 7 game 7s? your point?

That Ovechkin shouldn’t get the free pass for his team insuccess. He’s not clutch by any mean and often doesn’t show up in crucial games

Crosby also played in the 3rd round and 4th round, where its historically harder to score points.

So Crosby shows up with his 5 points?

Here’s a hint, you actually need a team to step up and help your star out. Look at game 7 against the rangers for the caps, who scored? OV. They lost, why? Cause their team couldn’t buy a goal.

Game 7 vs Detroit for Crosby, nothing. They won; why? Talbot had the game of his life. Game 7 vs Montreal 2010, they lost. Why? Because Crosby nor his team showed up.

Crosby, game 7 vs NY in 2014, blew a 3-1 lead and didn’t have a point in the last few games. Why? He and his team didn’t show up. Why didn’t Crosby close that series out? He’s clutch no?

For OV, game 7 vs Montreal, he had a goal taken away that was BULLSHIT, and an assist. Had like a million shots. They lost, why? Halak has the series of his life.

Now for sure OV has had his moments where he could have stepped up 100%. But don’t act like he doesn’t try his hardest to will his team to win. His best and his teams best have never coincided.

Both OV and Crosby have had their moments of failure, so don’t try to make Crosby out as some game 7 hero who can go get you a goal whenever he sees fit. You actually need a team to win

Outside of him flat out not being as good as the top 10 (or 20) is he has two years 11-12 and 16-17 that are in his prime and clearly not close to being top 10 in the league seasons.

When you look at the best guys they never had those dips in their prime. Crosby's worse season is likely this year where he is going to be well over a PPG and still likely to be top 10 in scoring.

Its is hard for me to take Ovechkin seriously as a top 10 guy when he has multiple ok (for an all time great) seasons and those two clearly sub par (again in terms of comparing to the greats) seasons. When you factor in how terrible he is defensively, his lack of understanding/willingness to do the little things to win and instead thinking that the big hit and wild emotions are leadership and he can score all the goals he wants but it isn't close enough to get him to the top 10.

Why are you always making excuses for Ovi? Crosby also played against that same Halak the same year in a game 7. Ovi also had games where his team won without getting on the scoresheet either. Don't forget that in 2009 Crosby was up against Z and Lidstrom. Those two did absolutely nothing in that game 7. Also if you remember, Crosby was injured that game and did not return. The moment Sid left, Detroit started controlling the game while Pittsburgh was in all-defense mode. You're acting like Ovechkin is the only guy who steps up for his team in the playoffs, which isnt true.

I already pointed out your last statement, where there were moments that where ovi could have stepped up even more, and that both his best and his teams best haven’t coincided. I conceded that already. I also said that both him and SC have had their share of failures, it’s just that when Crosby doesn’t show up, his team can pick up the slack!

I wish Ovi would do more 100%, to say that he has been a great leader all the time is not true, however, you cannot say that the reason they do not advance is because of OV fully. He has blame 100%, but it’s more on his team. They haven’t been able to put OV in a position to win. Look at their past few game 7 goal outputs:

2017: shutout
2015: 1 G
2013: shutout
2010: 1 G
2009: 2 G
2008: the only season where they scored more than 2 goals in a game 7; 3

In all of the games they scored, OV recorded at least a point

You arent winning when you score at a rate of 1.16 gpg as a team in an ELIMINATION GAME

Ok, so Ill take every top scorer from every playoffs since the 2005 lockout (Sid's and OV's 1st season) and compare their numbers for round 1 and 2 vs 3 and 4

2006: Eric Staal 28 PTS - 15 PTS in 11 GP for 1,36 PPG vs 13 PTS in 14 GP for 0,93 PPG (8 PTS in the finals)

2007: Daniel Alfredsson 22 PTS - 11 PTS in 10 GP 1,1 PPG vs 11 PTS in 10 GP for 1,1 PPG (5 PTS in the finals)
Jason Spezza 22 PTS - 12 PTS in 10 GP for 1,2 PPG vs 10 PTS in 10 GP for 1 PPG (2 PTS in the finals)
Dany Heatley 22 PTS - 14 PTS in 10 GP 1,4 PPG vs 8 PTS in 10 GP for 0,8 PPG (1 PT in the finals)

2008: Henrik Zetterberg 27 PTS - 13 PTS in 10 GP for 1,3 PPG vs 14 PTS in 12 GP for 1,17 PPG (6 PTS in the finals)
Sidney Crosby 27 PTS - 14 PTS in 9 GP for 1,56 PPG vs 13 PTS in 11 GP for 1,18 PPG (6 PTS in the finals)

2009: Evgeni Malkin 36 PTS - 19 PTS in 14 GP for 1,36 PPG vs 17 PTS in 11 GP for 1,55 PPG (8 PTS in the finals)

2010: Daniel Brière 30 PTS - 15 PTS in 12 GP for 1,25 PPG vs 15 PTS in 11 GP for 1,36 PPG (12 PTS in the finals !!!)

2011: David Krejci 23 PTS - 10 PTS in 11 GP for 0,91 PPG vs 13 PTS in 14 GP for 0,93 PPG (6 PTS in the finals)

2012: Anze Kopitar 20 PTS - 10 PTS in 9 GP for 1,11 PPG vs 10 PTS in 11 GP for 0,91 PPG (5 PTS in the finals)
Dustin Brown 20 PTS - 11 PTS in 9 GP for 1,22 PPG vs 9 PTS in 11 GP for 0,81 PPG (4 PTS in the finals)

2013: David Krejci 26 PTS - 17 PTS in 12 GP for 1,42 PPG vs 9 PTS in 10 GP for 0,9 PPG (5 PTS in the finals)

2014: Anze Kopitar 26 PTS - 19 PTS in 14 GP for 1,36 PPG vs 7 PTS in 12 GP for 0,58 PPG (2 PTS in the finals)

2015: Patrick Kane 23 PTS - 13 PTS in 10 GP for 1,3 PPG vs 10 PTS in 13 GP for 0,78 PPG (3 PTS in the finals)
Tyler Johnson 23 PTS - 12 PTS in 13 GP for 0,92 PPG vs 11 PTS in 13 GP for 0,85 PPG (2 PTS in the finals)

2016: Logan Couture 30 PTS - 17 PTS in 12 GP for 1,42 PPG vs 13 PTS in 12 GP for 1,08 PPG (6 PTS in the finals)

2017: Evgeni Malkin 28 PTS - 18 PTS in 12 GP for 1,5 PPG vs 10 PTS in 13 GP for 0,77 PPG (4 PTS in the finals)

So, only 4 players amongst the 17 players listed (24%) had a better PPG (or equal) in the last two rounds of the playoffs and 5 of them (29%) had more points in the last two rounds than the first two.

Fun fact: None of the leading playoffs scorers had a better PPG or more points in the last two rounds compared to the first two after 2012

Ill never blame only one player for his team failures. However, like Ive pointed out, Ovi had two or three games seven when he didnt showed up at all. Crosby has one. BTW, OV didnt scored a goal in 2010's game 7.

i said he at least recorded a point in the games they were not shut out, and if i recall, the goal he scored in G7 in 2010, got called back because of a BS goalie interference call, im still pissed about it.

both have had their failures, it's just that one has a team to back him up. cheers

Fair enough, I believe you. You didn't have to go through all of this, I think it would've been easier to simply compare the average playoff GPG in round 1 & 2 with the average playoff GPG in round 3 & 4 since 2010.

I've seen people make this claim before. You're the first one to back it up with the numbers. I applaud you for doing this work. I'm sure I'm not the only one learning something new today.

Caps' best playoffs run was under Dale Hunter when Ovechkin played 13-14m/g. That's all you need to know
