What if the CIS still had the old conferences?

The CIS used to have a whole lot of conferences.

Until 1971, Ontario and Quebec had three conferences. The Quebec-Ontario Athletic Association (QOAA) and the Ottawa-St. Lawrence Conference (OSLC) oeprated in both conferences. The Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA) operated solely in Ontario. Those three conferences were divided into the Ontario Universities Athletic Association (OUAA) and Quebec Universities Athletic Association (QUAA) until 1986-87. AFter that the QUAA folded and its surviving teams joined the OUAA, now called the OUA.

From 1972-73 to 1984-85 the former Western Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAA) was split into the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) and the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The GPAC teams then joined the CWUAA.

So what if we turned back the clock? The NCAA has numerous conferences and teams can jump from one to the other. What would the standings look like? I sorted out the teams, placing new teams in the CWUAA and QOAA.

The standings look kind of funny, because I used actual results where possible. Some teams made great gains, and others suffered great losses.

In hockey, the AUS (AUAA back then) used to be two conferences, MacAdam and Kelly.

UNB, STU, and UdeM in New Brunswick plus UPEI made up the MacAdam while the four Nova Scotia schools made up Kelly. Until they folded their program Mount Allison was in MacAdam and UCCB (now Cape Breton University) was in Kelly for a few years.

If I remember correctly, teams played out of their conference twice (home and home) and six times each within their division.

The conference winners met for the AUS/AUAA championship, meaning you couldn't have two Nova Scotia schools or two New Brunswick schools in the final.

Those were two divisions within the same conference. They previously had east and west divisions (mostly NS and NB) which played no interlock back in the day when a "season" was just a few games.

I don't believe the U of S was ever in the GPAC, they always played in Canada West. If you were digging deep, the confusion may have lay in the U of S - Regina Campus that became the U of R in the mid-70s. If I remember right Brandon University was in the GPAC.

I realize you are trying to make it so there wasn't three teams in the GPAC. But even if you wanted to, I doubt the U of S would have moved to the GPAC. From what I have read, the GPAC was kind of like the little guy out West. If you were a big time University the CWUAA was the place to play. I am not slighting the Bisons, but I believe that was the prevailing idea beyond the U of M.
