Plays for same team as Guhle, so I suppose they got to see quite a bit of him this year. Pretty solid defensive game like Guhle too. Solid pick.

Future Considerastions, 93:

VOJTECH BUDIK
POSITION: Defense
SHOOTS: Left
TEAM: Prince Albert (WHL)
BORN: January 29, 1998
VITALS: 6’-1” / 190 Lbs
STATS: 70 GP 3 G 13 A 16 PTS 20 PIM

Budik is a well-rounded defenseman. He does a good job of prioritizing tasks and shoring up his own end of the rink first and foremost. He uses his quickness and lateral footwork to keep tabs on his opponent’s movements and keep him to the perimeter. Budik is quietly efficient, using the best routes available to retrieve pucks and retain possession as he works the puck back up ice. He has a smoother style of skating that really benefits from the first strong step, allowing him to gain momentum. His ability to remain balanced in the fine-motor aspects of his skating really solidifies his stance and allows him to not be knocked off the play. Budik is strong physically and works hard on the boards to contain opponents so his teammates can dig at the pucks. His coverage of the defensive end is very strong, and he controls his actions and takes away variables to the offense with his mobility and stick. He keeps gaps relatively tight and cuts off lanes to the net before a drive begins. Budik handles the puck with some skill, but keeps it fairly simple when carrying the puck up ice. He uses some pump fakes and slight change of direction to create a bit of room to get the pass off. He is very strong through his stick and is seldom getting stripped of the puck when he is holding onto it. He doesn’t have a ton of offensive creativity and chooses to play a safer, complementary type of two-way game.

NHL POTENTIAL: Middle-Pairing Two-Way Defenseman

I had Budik as a borderline 2nd round talent. Great value here. Skating with the puck is elite. everything else needs work.

It's going to fun when we do the next prospect poll, and I vote Budik higher than someone drafted ahead of him, and get yelled at for having an opinion that differs from the draft order.

RLR ranked Budik #74, praising his skating and defensive game, while not expecting much offense from him:
Defensive standout uses intelligent positioning to box out opponents and stays right off the hip shooters with great spacing. Terrific footwork, agility, and defensive awareness. Takes space given to him and turns innocent looking pinches into dangerous ones -- puts in second effort to ensure pucks get to teammates in scoring areas. Long stride with great glide -- deceptive, effortless skater. Great defensive fundamentals, never turns his back on the play, frequently hits wingers on the breakout with no look passes, and keeps passes out of the middle. Great hand-eye coordination with a quick stick to knock down saucer passes in the slot. Decent size and strength is still developing. Outworks opponents behind his net, frequently winning battles against larger forwards through sheer desire. Plays simple, mistake-free game. Coaches always put him out to protect late leads -- shutdown defender.

Projection: Fabulous skating shutdown defender.
Style compares to: Zbynek Michalek

Really like the scouting report here and the emphasis on his ability to move in the transition game

It seems that people expected a lot more of him coming into this season, and he didn't produce as expected, which led to his fall in the draft. However, I think that misses the mark. Kids that skate this well and are already way ahead of the curve defensively are just great picks. He has good puck skills, he just seemed tentative in the neutral zone and offensive zone, which could be as much about system and lack of coaching as player ability. He struggled to adapt to the smaller ice surface in my opinion, but that's all about experience. I think you'll see a big jump in performance and production this season, he'll be one of those "how did he go so late" players.

@SabresProspects - Vojtech Budik gets the OT winner. Prince Albert defeats Calgary 6-5.

The marker is Budik's first of the year in his third contest. It's his fifth career goal in 129 Western Hockey League games, and his second-ever game-winner. It's the first overtime goal of his career.

There are differences in opinion regarding Budik's expectations as he continues his development at the junior level. All camp long, he has been preaching his need to be a stay-at-home defenseman who relies on a crisp first pass out of the zone and getting shots off when the play flows up ice.

The extra space in overtime allows him to skate more. Some, like myself, are hoping that trait emerges more at even-strength as he logs a heavy dose of minutes this season on the Raiders blueline.
