Is Uber prevalent in the Detroit area? I'll be staying with family in Livonia and pulling a Lions/Wings double header on 12/11. Curious how easy it would be to catch an Uber from Livonia to Ford Field or Nemo's that morning.

I don't know from personal experience but I have friends that use the heck out of Uber all over the metro detroit area

I have been to Detroit 3 times now and going back in march 2017 to attend the last 4 games in the Joe.
Stayed 2 times in The Westin Cadillac Hotel (Recommended) 1 time in Crown Plaza Hotel
Now going to Motor City Casino Hotel, Westin was sold out.
Make sure you visit Ham Shop (330 Monroe St, Detroit, MI) for excellent cheap breakfast and lunch.

We'll be visiting your fine city this weekend and having never been to Detroit, does anyone have any recommendation on parking for the game? I'm basically looking for a hassle-free (or minimal hassle) suggestion. We'll be stating in Dearborn and have a couple young kids so just finding the best way to get in and out of the city. We may do a bit of sight-seeing after the game (more of just a walk maybe) so any tips there for a family with a couple kids under 12 would be great. TIA!

Greektown Casino and Hotel has a parking garage that is usually free. If not free, parking ranges from $10-$20.
From Greektown you can take the people mover, or a little walk.

Thx for the tip. thinking about Greektown as maybe leaving later may be less of a problem after the game.

As for Toronto, Messini is a popular place, just outside the core of the city. If Greek isn't your thing, Pizzeria Libretto is well regard for their pizza. Keeping it simple, The Fox is one place I've eaten once and they got some great beer and is right by the Air Canada Centre.

As for where they are playing the Centennial Classic, they are playign at BMO field so I am not too familiar with that area.

Can I bring a backpack into The Joe? I'm doing a Lions/Red Wings doubleheader on 12/11 and was hoping to have a convenient mode of jersey transport so I can swap jerseys w/o having to carry the other around.

I read most NHL teams were banning lady's bags/purses, so I'm doubtful that you can take in a backpack. And if you have one, they may pull you aside, definitely inspect it. It's about arena security mainly, iirc.

Just visited Detroit 3 times and coming back in march 2017 for a 4 time, to watch the last 4 games in the Joe.

I've been to Comerica to watch Tigers (3 times), been to Ford Field to watch Lions (2 times) so I'm pretty familiar with the city, actually love it in Detroit. I'll be coming in 2 weeks to watch the Habs at the Joe as it's my last chance to do so. Only question is, are the seats at the joe fat people friendly??

You're close to Greektown, and the People Mover (silly little train) has a stop there. It basically just makes a loop in that area. That might be the easiest way to get to The Joe. Or you could drive over and park on top of Cobo Hall roof parking. It's a lot quicker to get in and out than the parking bldg.

The Athenium is a hotel with suites right in Greektown, which may have cheaper rooms, if you can still get one. It would get you closer to the restaurants, bars and casino in the area.

I guess I wouldn't recommend walking to and from the arena, unless you're with a larger group. A wrong turn or two isn't the best thing to do in Detroit.

I can't help you with that one. I grew up in greater Chicago, so deep dish for me is a matter of pride. I moved to Michigan in my mid 30s. (I'm a Wings and Hawks fan now, once Bill Wirtz finally passed away.)

I bet your hotel people can point you in a good direction if no one here pipes up.

Not really deep dish, but Detroit style pizza is squared and deepish. The original Buddy's on Conant and McNichols (6 Mile) would be your best choice. Loui's in Warren would be a good back up if you have wheels...neither place has been redecorated since Carter was President, adding to the charm.

If you're relgated to downtown I've heard Niki's in Greektown is pretty good. Otherwise Pizzreia Supino in Eastern Market or Motor City Brew Works is your best bet for non-Detroit style pizza. Enjoy your stay!

Try and call the box office at The Yost. If that's a dead end they are open on game day if you walk up. That's Ohio State weekend so it might be slim pickin's. And, honestly, everyone I've contacted on Craigslist has been legit. Most of them will be willing to meet you in neutral location to sell the tix.

Yost is amazing; it oozes hockey history and there is not a bad seat in the house. I'd say it's the best barn I've seen a hockey game in.

In general I'd say never plan on walking to the Joe. It's not in a particularly walkable part of town unless you just coming over from Cobo. If you like casinos and and want bars/ restaurants etc go park over in Greektown and take the people move over. Or you could take a shuttle from one of the bars in Corktown. Although be aware of were you are parking your car at in Corktown as they do see a lot of broken windows in that part of town. If driving Cobo roof and even the Joe Garage aren't terrible options.

As for seats at the Joe, I've went with bigger people ans never seen them have a problem. The biggest issue at the Joe are the bathrooms and slick stairs.

And as for Pizza I'm a Jets/ Buddy's gal. If you are anti bread don't go for a Detroit Square Style pizza, you won't like it lol.

The walk over to The Joe isn't too bad. I walked there from The Old Shillelagh. My party was going to take the shuttle but we figured we'd get there faster on foot due to the post Lions traffic and the snow that never stopped falling. So we set off on foot and then watched as the OS shuttle passed us as we were crossing Jefferson near the Joe Louis fist. Kinda funny. Not a bad walk, though, even in the snow.

My cousin swears by Buddy's and Pizzapapolis. I've never been to either but I do enjoy Jet's. They opened two locations out in Arizona (Phoenix & Chandler) so I've been very excited about that.
