Good for Vanek. The rookie class this year is going to be stellar.

Frolov, as well, scored the game-tying and game-winning goals tonight. Also, Cammalleri scored the first Kings goal and again to win the shootout (though the game had already been won in regulation). JR collected assists on all three.

Well, he did so shooting on the Capitals' #4 goalie on their depth chart (Daigneault)... for the first two periods, Kolzig shut out Buffalo, and this was with a team of mostly AHL- and ECHL-bound players in front of him.

Vanek's going to be an outstanding player, but take a closer look at the Capitals' roster tonight:

Matt Pettinger - Jared Aulin - Miroslav Zalesak
Matt Bradley - Dave Steckel - Chris Bourque
Louis Robitaille - Brooks Laich - Jonas Johansson
Boyd Kane - Boyd Gordon - Stephen Peat

Lawrence Nycholat - Mathieu Biron
Jamie Heward - Steve Eminger
Bryan Muir - Shaone Morrisonn

Olaf Kolzig (1st, 2nd periods)
Maxime Daigneault (3rd period, OT, shootout)

it's so hard to be clutch during the first pre-season game.

Vanek also scored the only shootout goal also.

Not clutch?Try 3rd period of the NCAA championship game (or any big game for that matter,he scores a ridiculous amount of goals when it matters most)

don't laugh-- he had a shootout goal in the meaningless post-game thrill-a-thon, too!

Isn't that the Caps roster next season?

great minds drink alike. :teach:

That's the only goal I've seen Tommy V score in real life so far, it was huge.

I can't wait to see Vanek this year, if he and Briere can connect like I hear they apparently are I think he could have an amazing rookie campaign.

I was at the game, he did look good at times. Over all he did well!

Agreed.

He is so underrated here.
Normally i'd go against the grain and agree but...

One. Preseason. Game.

Vs. The. Capitals.

This isn't spelling the OH MY GOD, POSTERS BE RECKONED -- VANEK HAS ARRIVED.

Let's see Vanek do this a few times this season.

I agree with you in principle about this being one game. However, I have no doubts that Vanek will do that a few times during the season.

I heard a lot of the same stuff entering last season.

And how did Vanek do last season?

Oh yeah, he was the 2nd best goalscorer in the best NA league last year.

And as far as not scoring on Kolzig goes, you weren't at the game and didn't see the play in the first where Vanek undressed pretty much every Cap on the ice and slipped the puck through Kolzig's 5 hole only to see it slide wide of the left post.

Feel free to go the wait and see route.

But don't expect to have to wait too long.

The chemistry that Briere talked about not being there with Satan is certainly there with Vanek.

That goal was SICK!

It wasn't as good as his one in practice the other day, but the whole Pistol Pete-ish going around the puck with his stick and then teh quick wrister top shelf was awesome.

If they count SO goals in your regular season totla, Vanek might get 40 easy this year.

Well, aside from the missing Witt, Ovechkin, Cassels, Halpern, Zubrus, Semin, Sykora, Sutherby, Majesky, Clark, Clymer, Yonkman... then I guess so.

The fact that it's Washington's B/C team out there makes it even more stark that the score was as close as it was, in my book. These are the guys that are going to be long shots to make a squad as thin as the Capitals are going to be this year, much less a real NHL team's depth chart.

If I'm Buffalo, I'm asking myself how my veteran-laden lineup let it remain that close, for that long.

I'll tell you why:

It's bc the Capitals' 05/06 squad has the potential to be the most underrated 15-win team ever.

Yes it's One. Preseason. Game. Yes it's Vs The. Capitals.

Which is why he should do OK! What really matters, HE DID DO OK. A hell of a lot better than not scoring the tying and winning goal. Right????
