3 months away from draft time! This is when it starts to get exciting folks. The next edition should be May, and should also come with a mock draft post lottery! As always, let me know what you think, and who you think should be higher, after all, we’re all different people and therefore see different things.

Top 15 has some really high potential players. Not a bad year to miss the playoffs I guess but god I want Svechnikov

This must have taken a lot of time, thanks for providing this kind of content for us to discuss!

I'm curious what you think of Martin Kaut and Joe Veleno
Kaut has a higher ppg than Necas had in his draft year, so I'm wondering why people aren't as high on him.
Since going to Drummondville Veleno has been great. He's an elite skater with elite playmaking abilities, a perfect fit for todays NHL. I personally have him at 12.

I don't really see how Jared mcisaac would fall all the way to 40, but I could be wrong. Nicely put together list

Huuuuuuge list!

I'll comment on some first rounders:

Bouchard at 7? Move him to #5!
I like Kupari and Veleno in the early teens.
You have Merkely in the top 20 - lots of dissenters out there about that choice! Personally I don't know anymore
Mcbain's about right - he'll either go low twenties are early thirties dependin on tournament for U18s
Khovanov I nothing about, but i am reading some good things about him - maybe he'll go earlier than your #30, not sure

Thanks

@Tryamkin Can you hep me understand why some people have denisenko way over kravtsov and why kravtsov isn't in everyones top 10? I notice that Denisenko is doing mediocre work in the mhl(above average scorer) while Kravtsov has 6 goals and 5 assists in 13 games in the khl playoffs right now.

Personally I haven't ever watched Kravtsov besides a few of his goals, but statistics would say he has elite talent. It's similar to Tarasenko during the 2010 draft. I'm thinking it's because of Denisenko performing at the world juniors and Kravtsov not performing well. What do you think?

Great list, love the work overall! I’m only going to mention Q players in this but I think McIsaac/Groulx/Rodrigue/Fortier are too low and that Zavgorodny/MacDonald/Kurashev/Kotkov are too high.

McIsaac hasn’t had the year we all expected (or at least not what I’ve expected) but I still think he’s a 1st round talent and has potential to be a solid top 4 defence, he’s got some grit to his game, I think he’s better offensively then he gets credit for and while I don’t think he’s a star in the waiting, I think he’s a strong prospect.

Groulx’s offensive game isn’t coming along quite yet but he does the little things and is good defensively, probably is a winger at the next level and doesn’t have huge offensive upside but I think his offence will explode in the next 2 seasons and is a safe bet to be an NHLer, while his upside isn’t huge, his floor as an NHLer is enough for me to have him in round 1.

Rodrigue is all potential, and while he isn’t huge by any means he’s very athletic and I like his upside. Goalies is basically just a dart throw anyways so it’s hard to get upset about any ranking on them, I just think he deserves to be higher. Mostly just a gut feel.

Fortier is on the small side but he’s an absolute water bug on the ice. Is an explosive skater and relentless on the forecheck. Has some offensive capabilities and will be a big time Jr scorer, it probably doesn’t translate to the NHL but with his skating and relentlessness, I see a future NHLer.

Zavgorodny is a real good offensive player but for some reason I just can’t shake the feeling that it never translates to the NHL game, he didn’t have a great year for Rimouski and that’s probably due to the transition to the Q and the style that team plays. He definitely has offensive upside but I don’t like his size/how his game projects.

MacDonald has goal scoring ability but I really worry about the work ethic and ability to translate it to the next level. I expected him to take a greater step this year and isn’t a very strong skater, I think ultimately it ends up holding him back and what appears to be a lack drive will be his undoing as a legit NHL prospect.

Kurashev I’ll be completely honest, I don’t know what it is but I just never watch him and get the sense it’s going to work out for him. He’s a very good play maker, and has great puck skills but he’s just one of those guys that I can’t get behind for whatever reason.

Kotkov is a real big winger, has good offensive skills and isn’t a bad skater. I like him more in the 4th-6th round range, then I do as an early-mid 3rd but at that point a lot of guys are interchangeable anyways.

Great work and love the list, just some nitpicking more than likely on my part, just thought I’d chip in my 2 cents on a few guys in the Q!

Kaut is a great player, he’s very good at many aspects of the game and has had a very strong year. Veleno, I’m not a very big fan of which I’ve made somewhat clear over the last 8 months I’ve made lists. His offensive game leaves me wanting more, and isn’t really a goal scorer.

For sure, 40 is quite a harsh drop, I agree. I’ve been a little hard on him, and he’ll be a good fit for an NHL team, as he’s almost guaranteed to fit in very soon. It’s his playstyle and potential that throws me off.

I really like Bouchard, although Hughes has really stepped up in the NCAA playoffs, so he deserved a small boost in rankings in my opinion. I like how every defenseman in this chunk of second tier players has their own MO; Hughes is the high end offensive defenseman PP guy, Boqvist is a great offensive defenseman with some defense thrown in, Dobson is the safe two way guy, Smith is more defensive, and Bouchard is the great skater with good offense.

Kupari was someone I was very high on. He had a dissapointing year for me, as I expected a breakthrough, he ended up playing on the wing for most of the year.

As explained above, Veleno is a safe pick, but not someone I would take near the top 10 personally, I feel he will be the Michael Rasmussen type pick this year who gets reached higher than people think he should be taken.

I feel like a broken record with my Merkley explanation, but my expectation is that he can really smarten up not only defensively, but as a mature adult with the help of professional coaching and trained guiding hands. He’s the 2nd best offensive defenseman in this draft in my opinion behind Dahlin, and he’s not even very far behind if you ask me. He has a high potential if he figures out his defense.

I’m not necessarily a McBain fan, but he’s going to be a good middle 6 center, which is still worthy of taking in the 1st round, a reliable two way guy.

People have been trashing Khovanov as of late for how he’s played since coming back from Mono. He has top 10 skill for sure, but the one area of concern is his skating, which I hope can be fixed. I think he rushed back into games quickly to try to get scouts to notice him again, after all its happened to other players injured in their draft year, it’s really not a good position to be in.
