The Blackhawks were stunned last night by the resurgent St. Louis Blues - falling 9-2 at Chicago Stadium. Two goals in the first twenty seconds of the third, both even strength markers, left Ty Conklin angry and critical of his teams performance. "We have relaxed of late, and the Blues have a high powered offence, and we should be better. We're normally quite responsible defensively, but this was a true collapse." The Hawks mini-slump, in which they also lost to the Sabres, has seen the team concede 14 goals in two games.

Police are reported to have raided the Detroit Red Wings practice facilities on Tuesday and arrested two unknown staff members. The two staff members have been charged with scalping tickets stolen from the Wings dressing room. Players on the squad reported suspicious activities several months ago and were apparently involved in the sting, although Gary Roberts claimed surprise.

Panic may have set in amongst Ducks fans as the teams woeful form continues and goaltenders Sean Burke and Brian Boucher continue to be booed by large contingents of the Arrowhead faithful, but that didn't stop rookie Kurt Sauer from guaranteeing playoffs this springtime.

Mike Modano sounded confident prior to Tuesday mornings skate that he would soon return from his concussion. Modano skated with the team and followed that up with an intense on-ice work-out behind closed doors. Columbus welcomes the Senators in a game tomorrow night. Modano is still considered doubtful for that game.

The Panthers added another piece to their charge for the playoffs when they aqcuired centre Wez Walz in exchange for Adam Mair from the Atlanta Thrashers. The Thrashers are looking to get younger in a hurry as their losing season continues. Expect the fire-sale to continue but don't expect the Panthers to be the destination for any more players from Georgia.

The Canucks are rebuilding - and are ahead of their expected schedule to return to playoff contention - but the playoffs are still a very real possibility this season. This poses an interesting problem for GM Sean Keough. Does he trade prized potential free agents Mike Peca and Mike Sillinger or does he re-sign them? At this point, negotiations with both players seem stalled.

The Islanders faithful must be happy this week, with news that their future on and off the ice is a little more secure. The team has received permission to renovate parts of the Nassau Colliseum and recieved leading Canadian junior player Rob Schremp and Finish goaltender Tuuka Rask in return for winger Shane Doan.

The HFNHL quietly negotiated a new deal with their officials, which not only erases the spectre of yet another labor battle, but is fair and honourable. Salaries will increase at varying levels, but in general, the officials will get a 30% raise over four years.

It's rent a player season, and no player from the Penguins is 'untradeable' according to GM Robb Doduck, even star players like Brad Richards.

GM Abbas Chagani knows that his team will have a top four pick come draft day and that he has not had time to develop a new scouting staff to replace those fired when Chagani took over at the start of the season. Chagani was in Europe this past week, scouting for new scouts, and watched highly rated prospects Michael Frolik in Kladno, CZ and Alexander Vasyunov while in Russia.

Are the lightning willing to part with Dan Ryder for some desperately needed goaltending help to get them into the playoffs and if they are, who is out there that might aid there cause? Jose Theadore might be available from San Jose, but will Tampa be willing to pay his salary, at over 2.2 million for the remainder of the season. Other options include Chris Osgood and Ed Belfour.

Ducks coach John Tortorella had this to say about rookie defenseman Kurt Sauer's recent guarantee that his team would be in the playoffs this spring:

"Kurt's a good kid. In fact, we could use a few more guys on the roster like Kurt. He's done a good job on our third pairing, and he's taken advantage of what opportunities he's had to play minutes on the kill. That said, our big guns certainly need to step up if we have any shot of getting this ship turned around."

"As for Burkie (Sean Burke) and Boosh (Brian Boucher)...all I can say is that Jean-Marc Pelletier's hungry to see ice time in the HFNHL. Our team has done a good job defensively of keeping the shot totals down, yet we're losing games. You guys tell me whose responsibility that is."
